Iron is said to have been melted in five seconds in a recent experiment carried out by Mr. Louis DreyfuS at Mr. T. A. Edison’s laboratory at Orange, N. J. Mr. Dreyfus represented the Goldschmidt Chemical Thermo Industrie of Essen, Germany. He covered an iron wrench in a crucible with a secret composition and added a small quantity of powdered aluminium. The wrench, which was six inches long and one-half inch thick, was melted in - five seconds after the mixture was set on fire, the temperature being estimated at 3,000 degrees C.
