Zollinger of Fort Wayne has been granted a pension of S3O per month, Thomas Pricbett, ex-clerk of Noble county, died at his home In Ligonier Friday morning, aged 09. He was a veteran of the civil war. The democrats of Noble county will hold their convention at Albion, Wednesday, June 18. An Elkhart county woman loaded a shotgun and used it to frighten the birds from her garden. The recoil of the gun injured her so severely that death resulted. The auditor of state has issued a call for the condition of all state banks at the close of business, April 30. There are 110 state banks in operation now. During the month of April fortyfive new rural mail routes were established in Indiana, increasing the total number in the state to 022. William Kessler, a sidewalk contractor at Columbia city, has filed a petition in bankruptcy. His liabilities are $2,533 26 and assets $l,lOB. The postoffice department at Washington has made a sweeping ruling against endless chain-letter advertising schemes. Mrs. Andrew Logan, three miles west of Montpelier, fell last week by tripping on a board and broke her leg above tho knee. She is 70 years old. The commissioners of Allen coifnty have awarded the contract for a new bridge across the St. Joe river, about Robinson park. The total cost will be nearly $20,000. John' Wodka broke up a Polish dance at Michigan City, stabbing Frank Bartz perhaps fatally and driving other dancers from the place at the point of a revolver. A Columbia City man, too modest to have hie name connected with it, donated SI,OOO toward paying off indebtedness on a new United Brethren church which was dedicated recently. James Mather, an inmate of the Longclifie asyltun from Elkhart county, wrote home to a friend saying that he was not lonesome, as “there are a great many people here from Elkhart county and there are a great many more there that ought to be here.” The gathering of cigar butts has been prohibited in Chicago because of the great danger to people who do not know any better than to put into their mouths the cheap cigars and cigarettes made from such filthy refuse. The risk of thereby contracting some dread disease such as consumption, cancer, or smallpox is very great. An appendicitis club of over 100 has been organized at Sturgis, Michigan, and it is expected tnat it will shortly have 300 members. The membership fee is one dollar, and assessments will be made as required for assistance of any member who may be taken with the disease and require medical or surgical treatment. It is a plan of mutual insurance or aid association. A Goshen man offers a reward of $25 for information that will lead to the conviction of the “wretch” who poisoned his dog. He also adds that the miserable creature who committed the act upon an inoffensive animal would take the life of a man if he knew the crime would never be found out. He only deserves the fate that awaits him hereafter, in the lake that burns.
