Babcock’s Statements Refuted.
On the occasion Babcock refers tn in his loathsome article of April 11th, no one uttered an unbecoming word but himself. He did not respect hi* own hired help and cursed like a sen captain. Nothing unreasonable w» asked of him, only an explicit explanation of his article, “Office Holding by Proxy.” He first made reply that Blue belonged to the “gang” and that he (Babcock) owned the Democrat office (notwithstanding that he swore in court that Mrs. Babcock wan the owner) and run the paper, making it emphatic by interspersing bls sentences by horrible oaths. When Blm had finished his business with hipi ho left to where the chances were equal, and told him that he was a coward and the matter could be'isettled outside. Babcock stayed ‘in. . Barret house booze is Babcock’s favorite drink, but it isn’t required as a stlmulent to tell him the truth. It was the cowardice in him and the mess of rot in his head that caused him to threaten to use the mallet and rule. • The trade of the Chicago Bargain Store is growing to such proportion* that it is getting to be a problem bow to take care of the Saturday trade. Last Saturday it was impossible tn handle all their trade and many were turned away. All afternoon team were lined up on Van Rensselaer street waiting their turn to securn their purchases.
