EDITOR BITTERS DEAD.
Publisher of the Rochester Republican and a Veteran Journalist. Editor Major Bitters, of the Rochester Daily and Weekly Republican, died last Saturday, age sixty-six years. His illness was acute liver trouble, aggravated by a cold. Major Bitters was one of the oldest newspaper men, in point of service, in the State. He engaged with the Peru Republican as foreman of the mechanical department in 1856, and remained there for seventeen years. Then he came to Rochester and pur chased the Republican, which he has owned ever since, except a few years spent at Rensselaer as editor of the Republican. He was one of the first to venture in the country daily business, and founded the Rochester Daily Republican in 1886. He is widely known in this section of the State as editor and leading Spiritualist, and had accumulated considerable property. The funeral was a public affair, held in the court bouse at Rochester, Monday. The Rev. J. H. Moore directed the funeral services and eulogies were given by several leading citizens. The publication of the Republican will be continued by Albert W. Bitters, who has been associated with his father all of his life.
