SCHOOL NOTES.
Verne flayers is sick. Helen Lamson, who was out of school last week, returned Monday, j Charles Wirkoff, of Lafayette, has ! been with us again, the past week, i putting in more radiator sections, And putting in larger ventilators in some of the rooms of the new building. Mr. Osborne, former teacher in the High School, visited the school Mon* day morning. He told the school; what enthusiasm means in play, in j athletics and in study. The last week, the High School has been treated to a host of gopd things. Friday Mr. Williams, of the law firm of Baughman & Williams, upheld his reputation as a speaker. Mr. Osborne talked Monday, and Dr. Wharton Tuesday morning. It is a matter of oommon observation, that according to the speakers we have, the Rensselaer High Sohool is about the best in the state. The pupils are the best looking; the teachers are the most progressive. “We ought to be congratulated on how much we know ” Really, now, you ought to hear what some of them do say. We actually feel sometimes that they must surely be mistaken aoout some of these things, else the teachers are wrong in their criticisms. Work is moving along nicely now, in the athletic practice. Every evening from 4 to 6 “squads” are at work “doing the hurdles,” putting the shot, throwing the hammer, and practicing the “broad jump.” Track work will soon commence, and then some idea may be gotten of what we may expect to do in the Interscholastic Meet, which probably will be held the middle of May. In the olden time, persons in trouble, or when pursued by the sheriff, found refuge in the Churches. There they could not be harmed. Owls made their abodes in the steeple towers, spiders spun their webs over the contribution box. Now, the scientist searches the church steeples seeking whom he may devour. Wholesale murder was committed in the M. E. church steeple, last Saturday night, when the boys of tbe Zoology class caught therein about five or six pounds of English sparrows. The Alumni of the High Sohool will hold a meeting Saturday evening, at 8 P. M. in the East court-room for the purpose of organizing an alumni association. Every Alumnuo who is in tbe city, should be present at that meeting. Monday evening in the Library Room, of tbe High School building, the teachers were greeted with a very pleasant surprise by Misses Cooper, Watson, Berry, May, Roberts and Howarth. After the regular teachers’ meeting, they spread before tbe as sembled hungry, such an array of good things that—that—-that they began to disappear at a lively rate. There were sandwiches and pickles, and olives; there was coffee and cake and ice cream and fudges, and pickles and olives and sandwiches. It being very evident that Mr. Hiatt ate more than any else, he was unanimously selected to express tbe sentiments of the “pleased.” The sentiment of all was expressed when one remarked “ Whoopi I’m glad I’m a living.” The Journal carries a. full line of legal blanks at reasonable prices.
