Historic Relics in Golf.

The Portage Golf Club of Akron, 0., has fdr its clubhouse the old western home of John Brown of Harper’s Ferry fame, and the members made as few changes as possible when they fitted it up for their purposes. It was the scene Of John Brown’s early conferences toward the liberation of the slaves, previous to his desperate attempt to carry out his own ideas with a small band of followers. The Savannah (Ga.) Golf Club utilizes as bunkers on its course the remains of the earthworks thrown up by the confederates for the defense of the city during the civil war. Instead of stopping shot, shell and bullets, they now fulfil the more peaceful and entertaining duty of catching badly driven golf balls. Gen. Robert E. Lee personally superintended the construction of these bunkers, little thinking of the benefit he was confronting upon the devotees of the royal and ancient game.
