Building Boom Boosts Wages.
Chicago telegram: Chicago is experiencing a boom In building that has sent workingmen’s wages above the union scale In some Instances. Ernest R. Graham, who Is superintending the construction of the new Marshall Field & Co. store, says some of the bricklayers are receiving as high as 55 and 60 cents an hour. Fireproofing contractors are said to be willing tq pay five cents an hour extra for the right kind of men. Work on the postofflee Is being delayed on account of the impossibility of securing granite cutters. Architectural ironworkers. bricklayers, fire-proofers, marble men, and mechanics generally are In great demand.
