Meads, the pastor of the F. J. F. Bruner lias returned from Bouth Dakota, where he recently went with John Reed,of Jordan township, and D. Dinger, of Monticello. Both the latter purchased 160 acre farms six miles west of Armor, S. D., and will make their home there. The Journal’s facilities for doing first class job printing, which have always been in the lead, are being continually added to. The Rensselaer foot ball team has been organized with Jennings Wright as manager, and Frank Sayler, captain. The team will be composed of the following members: Zern Wright, center; Whiting and Harmon, guards; Moon and Leopold, tackles; Van Grant, quarter back; Sayler and Parcels, half back; Gwin, Yeoman and Hardy, to be assigned. Practice will commence at once, and it is hoped to have the first game next week.

It shows Jasper county to have 3,870 white voters and four colored voters, an increase of 424 voters over 1895, when the last enumeration was taken. Newton county has 3,019, or an increase of 400. Henry Harris is preparing to make extensive additions to bis residence. T. J. Sayler started to Lamar, Col., Tuesday, where be is thinking of locating. Chris Amsler, of Fairbnry, 111., was tbe guest of his brothers, Henry and Jacob, Monday. The two Robertsons, Jr. and Sr., of Wheatfleld and Goodland, were in the city Tuesday. The Rensselaer football team will open the season at Delphi today with a team of that city, Mrs. W. G. Slagle was called to Hammond Sunday by the death of an aunt, Mrs. Lulu Owen. The Bennett Medical College football team, of Chicago, has been secured for a Thanksgiving game here. Mr. and Mrs. Ike Wiltshire, of Town Creek, Ala., are the guests of his brother, Harry Wiltshire, and family. They will take up their residence here. Rev. and Mrs. H. M. Middleton were over from Remington Tuesday. He reports that his son Ernest is still at Fort Sheridan, and has an easy job as steward for the band. Owing to the improvement of the health of Thomas Robinson, Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Frances, Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Overton and Mrs. S. O. Robinson have returned to their studies in the school of osteopathy at Kirksville, Mo. Sheriff Hardy has not had a bonanza so far during his incumbency. Hiß salary is SI6OO per year, or $375 per quarter, but unless the fees amount to that much, he is not entitled to it. So far he has not been able to collect enough to make his salary, and is a sufferer in consequence. A report filed with the commissioners this term shows that for the quarter ending August 31st, his collections were only $120.36, and this be will have to be contented with, unless the fees during the rest of his term exceeds his salary. Vernon Nowels is making arrangements to start a short order lunch ro m in the building adjoining Duvall’s livery barn, on the north. Ross Hawkins will have charge of the business. The master clock at the court house got out of order SnAday, causing the large clock to stop. It is being put in running order again The stoppage was caused by a small obstruction getting into the air connections. A special train from Crawfordsville passed through here Tuesday for Chicago. It contained the Ben Hur tribe of Crawfordsville, who had accepted a special invitation from Qen. Lew Wallace to witness the production of “Ben Hur” in Chicago. The W. R. 0. spent another pleasant day in the country last Saturday, at the home of Mrs. Ollle Warren, south of town. A fine dinner was served. The places of honor were given to two members of Post 84—Philip Blue and Wm. Warren. After dinner music was rendered by Miss Warren. Last Sunday Rev. C. D. Royse, pastor of the M E church, preached at the James school house, four miles south of town. At the close of the meeting a Sunday school was organized 1 , with the following officers : Superintendent, Mr. Cochran; assistant, Wm. Warren; secretary, Belle Adams; assistant, Hattie Warren; treasurer, Mrs. Adams; librarian, Lawrence Baker. Sunday school will be held every Sunday afternoon at 2:30. Rey. Royse has promised to preach every two weeks. A cordial invitation is extended to all to atten d these services.
New Odd Fellows’ Lodge.
A new Odd Fellows’ lodge was established at Gifford last week. The instituting work was done by the Rensselaer lodge, the members taking part going from McOoysburg on a special train on the Gifford road, the use of which was donated by Mr. Gifford. Members were also present from Medaryville, Wheatfleld and other points. Twenty-three members were taken into the new lodge, but there are a number of others waiting to join. John O’Connor was elected noble grand; Guy Beebee, vice grand; F. B. Hewitt, secretary, and John Kimble treasurer.

Some practical joker in North Manchester sent the names of twenty or thirty young young society ladies of that city to a matrimonial paper, giving glowing accounts of them and stating that they wished correspondents. The mails of North Manchester are now laden with love letters, with sweet sayings, and most of them with wife hunters. Some of the girls take the matter as a joke, while others look at it seriously, and it is said a marriage or two may result.
