A Suspicious Circumstance.
While a member of the Nebraska legislature, a Populist leader, made it a rule to oppose every bill that had to do with corporations. Whenever he arose to speak on one of those measures he invariably said: “I know there’s boodle behind this bill, Mr. Speaker. 1 know it because I have been • approached. One day the leader of the Democratic side arose while the Populist was hinting at boodle and asked permission to ask the Populist a question. “I am perfectly willing to answer any question the gentleman may ask me,” defiantly announced the Populist. The Democrat leveled a long lead pencil at -the Populist. “Will you please tell this body what there Is about you that causes all these fellows with boodle to approach you?”
