Theft of $5 000 in Transit.

Last Thursday the Bank of Columbia of Columbia, S. C.ยป forwarded to the Bank of Commerce of New York $5,000 in paper money. When the package arrived at its destination Saturday it was discovered that the money had been removed and brown paper substituted. The package was put up by a bank official in the presence of the president, Colonel W. G. Childs, and another official carried the package to the express office. The Columbia bank officials declare the bank is not to blame. Captain O. M. Sadler, general superintendent of the Southern Express company, is at work on the case. The packages bore no evidence of having been tampered with.
