Sister’s Triumph.
One of the last acts of Governor Mount was to grant an absolute pardon to Wm. Kennedy, who was paroled from the northern prison in 1897 and has since lived an exemplary life under the espionage of the prison authorities. Kennedy’s case was a remarkable one. He was sent up from Greensburg in 1885 for life for murder, being convicted on circumstantial evidence. His sister, Kate Kennedy, believed him innocent and fronrttredlty of his conviction worked unceasingly to secure his release. For several years Miss Kennedy, in man’s garb, traveled over the country in an endeavor to locate the real murderer. She tramped her way and never missed an opportunity to interview tramp i and criminals with the view to ascertaining the whereabouts of the man for whose crime she claimed her brother was suffering. Miss Kennedy appealed to every governor since 1885 to release her brother and finally Governor Mount paroled him. Kennedy went co his home in Cincinnati and in 1898 enlisted for the Cuban war. He served creditably and was promoted twice. When the regiment was mustered out he remained in Cuba and at present occupies a responsible position in the sanitary service at Havana under Gen. Wood, receiving a salary of SIOO per month. Governor Mount Saturday made out a full pardon for Kennedy and gave it to his sister. So the convict’s record at the northern prison has been finally closed.
