Rensselaer Union and Jasper Republican, Volume 8, Number 37, Rensselaer, Jasper County, 1 June 1876 — Decoration Day. [ARTICLE]
Decoration Day.
For the first time Decoration Day was observed at Rensselaer this year with appropriate ceremonies and a public demonstration. All the business bouses and many private residences displayed flags, and from 3 o’clock p. pj. tfltS o'clock-p. in. stores and public offices were closed... At-3. o’Clock-p. m. a proebssion was formed Ytt the court house squitre under The direction of Dr<JJ.*A. Moss us marshal and, preceded by tho eofiq-eff band, - marched to Weston Cemetery, where ceremonies occupying two hours were performed. ’JEty consisted of music by tlie cornet band, prayer by Rev. Thos. Vanscoy; singing by a selected choir; a poem read by Mrs. Thomas Thompson ; an oration by Capt. Charles A. Edmunds; eulogies to the dead of the Oth regiment Indiana infantry volunteers, the 87th, and those of the army in general, by Horace E. James, M. L. Spitler and James A. Burnham ; a pocin read by C. I’. Hopkins, strewing graves with flowers by the children under the direction of Mrs. E. P. Hammond. The whole -was very nicely and impressively performed, and reflected not a little credit upon the patriotism and goodness of heart of those who participated as actors and spectators. Tho rhusie and singiug were excellent, as was also the reading by Mrs. Thompson and Mr. Hopkins. Did we have force enough in our office, and space in our paper, wo would like much to have made a publication of the exercises in detail in thifi issue, and especially to have laid before the readers of The Union whose duties prevented their attendance upon the exorcises, the oration, of Cbpt. Edmunds and eulogies of Messrs. Spitler and Burnham. Perhaps it will be possible for us to do so in a succeeding number.
