Joseph Schierberg, a well known citizen of Cincinnati, who left that city some months s;iiCe for a visit to his native land, CofSrmany,) writes back to his friends that fee felts been arrested in the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg, Germany, upon the claim that he owes military sei vice to that State, but that he hopes through the mediation of Gov. •Wright, to whom he has written, that he will be speedily liberated. Mr. Sclrierberg •left Cincinnati about the first of October, 1859, for Havre and Paria. He went for his 1 -health, and designed to remain absent a year, vile has resided in tlie city about twenty-five years, and was not over eight or nine years old when he arrived in the United States. The Great Eastern.—Mr. CampbeHr the chairman of the Great Ship Company, lias issued a circular to the shareholders against certain misrepresentations and misconceptions with regard to the Great Eastern., Its general purport is to the effect that every inquiry will be-eourted at the meeting on the 11th of January; that much of the trouble in connection with the undertaking, arises from discussions at the Board, fomented by persons who are seeking their own personal aggrandizement, even at the risk of ruining the enterprise, and the work requisite to fit the vessel for a long voyage c innot involve any heavy amount. ?(Vs“The Sulivan Democrat says that there well near Coffee,Postoffice, in Clay which puzzles all the philosophy in .those parts. When the wind is from the Sleuth there is eight leel of water in the well. When the wind is Irt.m the North the well goes dry. If this is true, it is a phenomenon off more than usual interest to philosophers. Livingston, in Africa, is thought to have thoroughly “seen the elephant.” He writes to a London society, that somewhere, upon some river, about eight hundred of these noble animals burst upon his astonished vision. fpjfThe village of Greenfield, in the coun- ■ ty ot Se.ntlwich, Mass., isstfllicled withsmall pox and varioloid to ts tearful extent. (KrThe copyright of the Helper’s book is worth SSOO a week to the author. This shows the effect of opposition. Mr. Clark of Missouri has done more for Helper in two months than a powerful political party did in two years. D.
