A Brute.

Some three months ago a farmer from the town of Grand Rapids took from the county poor-house an orphan boy some seven years old, for the purpose of “raising” him. A few days ago, the Overseer of the Poor of that town brought th ? boy to Mr. Jackson, one of the Superintendents of the poor-house, to have him returned to that establishment. The boy was clad in thin summer stuff", almost bear foot, with his feet badly frozen, and his back and shoulders a mass of raw flesh from merciless beating. There is no end to the shocking tales the neighbors of this farmer in Grand Rapids tell of his cruelty to that boy. The name of this brute, wo learn, is Nelson Countryman, and we commend him to the particular notice of the next grand jury.— Ottawa Free Trader. Republican Club of Madison, Ind., has for years taken a copy of the Richmond Enquirer, with which to refute Democratic professions at home by reference to the columns of that paper. The thing worked verywell in the last Presidential election, and now when the club had sent on the money for a new year, the letter was returned with the indorsement, “The Richmond Enquirer does not want subscribers in Indiana.” We advise our friends here to subscribe for the New York Day-Boak for tiie coming campaign. Out of their own mouths sh ill we convict them.

How it was Received.—Some person hoaxed the St. Joseph (Mo.) We<J, an ultra pro-slavery paper, a few days since, to the effect that Mr. Sherman was elected Speaker. Instead of packing up and preparing to go out of the Union at once, the IVcs/ said that as Sherman was a Republican and had indorsed Helper’s book, it did not want him elected, but concluded he wot Id make an “able and impartial presiding officer.” (gb?“An animal .(failed the laughing jaskass, found nowhere but on the Australian continent, has been brought to San'.
