Rensselaer Gazette, Volume 3, Number 22, Rensselaer, Jasper County, 21 September 1859 — Importance of County Elections. [ARTICLE]
Importance of County Elections.
It is an admitted fact that the county officers throughout the State exereise great influence in the formation of public sentiment on political subjects. Many persons are surprised that two counties, lying side by side, should give 500 majority one way, and the other a similar majority to the other side. If the history of those counties were examined, it would be found, most likely, that this disparity had been occasioned by the politics of the county officers, at the time of their organization and since that time. The Democratic leaders, ever on the lookout for advantages, make great efforts to secure the county officers, and they ofton succeed in counties opposed to them in politics. In October next, county officers only are to be elected, and, if the Opposition desire to strengtnen themselves for 1860-, they ought to see to it that the county offices be filled by reliable, faithful, worthy men, who will care about something else than fobbing the fees when elected.— lndiana Atlas.
