A Prediction Verified.

Mazzini, the Italian Republican, predicted that the result of the late war would be the aggrandizement of dynasties, rather than the enfranchisement of peoples. Though the prediction was as the time ridiculed, it has been verified with remarkable fideliiy. The petty tyrants of Italy are strengthened in their position, Napoleon glorified, the S rdin'an kingdom enlarged, and the toroporal power of the Pope extended; but the people of Italy are as much vanquished as are the Austrians, the cause of Hungary rendered more hopeless than before, and the cause of Italian liberation “nipped in the bud.” These are the achievements of a war which cost over a hundred thousand lives, almost a countless amount of money, and the peace and happiness of as great an army of innocent wives and children as there are men in the French army. The eulogists of the third Napoleon may now exchange a blush for their misplaced confidence. The professed liberator has proved the champion of tyranny, and he who pretended to be fighting for liberal principles has turned out to be nothing less than the pillar of despotism. Dr. Hankinson has been arrested in New York as a swindler, who pretended to sell a secret for transmuting all metals into gold at a cost of $lB a pound, the waters of life at $1 a bottle which produced perpetual youth, and various love powders and other charms. It is a startling fact, showing the amount of ignorance and credulity nmong us, that Dr. Hankinson was in the receipt of from fifty to one hundred money letters daily, and was realizing a rapid fortune.
