Rensselaer Gazette, Volume 3, Number 16, Rensselaer, Jasper County, 10 August 1859 — Democratic Feelings Towards Douglas in Virginia. [ARTICLE]
Democratic Feelings Towards Douglas in Virginia.
A Virginia correspondent of the Richmond Enquirer writes that “should Senator Douglas get the nomination, and the Opposition run a Southern man, it is the general opinion, that Virginia would cast her vote for the Opposition candidate." The Lynchburgh Virginian has no doubt of this, and says that of all the politicians of the country, nominally Democratic, Douglas is the most offensive to the people of Virginia of all parties. While the absolute slaves of parly would of course vote for him if nominated, it knows that a great many of the independent Democrats of the State would reject him with contempt.
