Consider me Smith.

There is a v, ry good story in the papers of the day, which was played by old Dr. Caldwell, formerly of the University of N. Carolina. The old doctor wag a small man, and lean, but as hard and angular as the most irregular of pine nofs. He looked a* though he might be tough, but ho did not seem strong. Nevertheless he was among the knowing ones, reputed to be as agile as “a ent;” and in addition, was bv no means deficient in knowledge of the “nobl ■» science of self-defense.’’ Besides, he was as cortl as a cucumber. Well, in the Freshman class of a certain yenrwas a burly bi'o'y mountaineer of eighteen or nineteen. This gen : ti< conceived a great contempt for old Boltt ■’ physical dimensions, and his soul was horrified that one so deficient in muscle should he so potential in his rule. Poor Jones—th-it’s what we’ll call him—had no idea of moral force. At any rate he was not inclined to knock, under, and be controlled by a win that he imagined he c mid tie and whip. He at length deter, mined to givp the gen’lrrtiftn a genteel private thrashing, some night in the College C imnus. pretending to mist ke him for lome feHow student. Shortly a r t.er, on a dark and rainy night. .Tones met the doctor crossing the Campus Walking up to him abruptly. “Hello, Smith! you rascal—is this yon’’' And with that he strm k the old gentleman a blow On the side of the head that had nearlv felled him. Old Bolus said nothing, but squared him self, and at .it they went. Jones’ youth weight and muscle made him an “ugly customer,” hut after a round or two, the doctor’s science began to tell, and in a short time lie had knocked his beefy customer down, and was astraddle on his chest, with one hand on his throjjt, : nd the oth“r dealing vigor sis cuffs on tie’ side of his head.
