The Curate’s Mare.
A certain curate used to ride a noble mare, though very docile, only needed to hear bitn say “Hey!” to sta-t into a smart trot. One day he was mount -d on this valuable animal, and on liis way to a fair, when his attention was attracted by the black lucious fruit, on a mulberry tree in a hedge by the road side. It was beyond his reach, but have it he must, and as a dernier resort, iie attained it by stai ding on his horse's back. When he had eaten his fill, and was topping off with a few more, he began to boast to himself about the docility of his mare, “Here I stand,” he said, self-complacen ly, “as steady as if on the ground! Yet how would it be if some mischievous fellow should cry out Iley!" He had no sooner said the word than the mare started into a trot, and left him floundering in the brierry hedge! “Ah,” was hia sore reflection, “mu h may be thought that is nut wise to utter!”
