The Conclusion of the Sickles Trial.
The Washington correspondent of the New York Tribune says: , “Judge Crawford's charge clearly leaned toward Mr. Sickles—‘ike lvis late rulings, adopting all the important propositions ol the defense. The Jury retired at a little before two o’clock, and returned at three with a verdict of acquittal. On leaving the box., »hey stood eleven for acquittal against one for con- ictioti. The latter y ielded after lur th--r reflection and reasoning. “The verdict was received with ‘nud and long shouts, in the midst of which Mr. Stanton moved the discharge of the prisoner. Mr. Sickles then left the dock, and after shaking hands with the Jury and the mnltit ide it. the court room, was conducted through the M irshdl’s office to the street, where he was again greeted with hearty and repeated cheers. A-ter much difficulty, he entered a carriage with his father and counsel, and drove to Mr._M,-Blair's residence on 3a ifayelte squ ire, followed by a great crowd. 4t was restarted here last week that preparations for an; ovation were on foot in New York, in an'ieipition of his acquittal. “It m y now-, be regarded as settled that while Mr. Crawford is Judge, no member •of Congress can be convicted of a criminal offense ” The W isbington correspondent of the New York Times, says: “After the trl il I had the pleasure of meetling ten iff the gentlemen who composed the • Jury, and I am specially instructed by them to state, and they wish it understood, t!i ,t Th. y gave their verdict on the principle that, in ihe absence or any adequate punishment by iaw for ndultry, the m in wh > violates the honor and desolates the home of hi* neight liar, does so at the peril of iiis li-’e, and il he falls by the outraged husband's hands, he deserves his doom. This principle, they informed me, they agreed upon unanimously six days since They have made it from tins hour a principle of American law.”
