JBisccllaumis. Mind Your Aitches. Almost every body knows C . He is a big, red faced, full fed Englishman, good natured withal, and one of the best-hearted men in existence. He is very fond of good living, and no man is a better judge of ’alf an-’alf which is a beverage he swears by. But C is unfortunate with his h’s; he never can put one where one is wanted, but uses them liberally where there is no occasion for them. Many are the stories current about this peculiarity of C ’s, and not a few of them have appeared in print; but we 1 have heard one lately that has never had the honor of types to our knowledge. I A good many years ago, C used to keep an eating house. He was one of his own best customers, and seldom went home at night without taking his mug of ’al'-an’-’alf and something to eat. But he liked his mince pie warm; and one night he said to his bar-b y, “take this pie ’A ry,and go and ’eat it.” Harry looked surprised, but no* to “look a gift horse in the mouth,” obeyed the order without hesitation. In about half an hour, says C , “where’s that pie, ’Arry !’’ “It’s all right,” replied Henry, “I’ve ate it.” “The deuce you have,” says C ; “and pray who told you to heat it!” “Nobody,” said Henry, “and I did’nt heat it.” “Why, clow it,” roared C , getting excited, “I did’nt tell you to heat the pie; I told you to go and 'eat it,” “Well,” exclaimed Henry, “I know it, and I did’nt heat the pie; I ate it cold.” This was too much for C ;he came pretty near exploding, but finally saw the point of the joke, acknowledged the corn, took his ’alf-an-’alf and ate his pie without ’eating it, that night. But the story somehow got out, and though many years have elapsed since then, he has not heard the la?t of it yet. —zVew York Paper.
Mrs. Partington Patriotic.
•Hurra!’ said Ike, as he read the fact in the papers,‘here’s O’Rag.tn admitted to the Union!’ ‘A furiner. I should judge,’ remarked Mrs. Partington, looking very wisely at the steam that rose from the tea-cups and formed in one cloud near the ceiling, ‘but I’m glad they let him come in to enjoy our political rights and lefts, and other prerogatives. There’s room enough, and the rear of our in-, stitutions should be-extended. I don’t believe a man should be cut off because he wasn’t born in this country for twenty-one years, which of course wasn’t any fault of his, for everybody would be born here if they could have their own auction insulted.’ ‘lt means,’-said Ike, surprisingly, ‘a new ’ State!’ •Well, child,’ replied she, ‘the odds is only the difference—States or men, ’tis all the astro. Let ’em come in to our grand consternation, where the eagle shall spread its broad opinions over ’em, and make ’em happy in an unlimited bondage of brotherly affliction, like the Siamese twins.’
Interesting Tale.
’Twaa twillight. The sun had sunk beneath the western hills, and the bright ray which had streaked the western horizon had disappeared! A lovely female, who had been but one short week a bride, had been led to the hymenial altar with lively anticipations of future felicity, sat in a secluded apartment with her husband. She slowly moved her sylph-like form toward the pirt-i ner of her bosom—raised her delicate h ind- ! and— slapped him in the face with the dishcloth! I The remainder of this intensely, interesting story will appear in the zYttic Four/.Weekly Bladder, which is writtep for by Smasher, Blower, P. Nuts, Geoigie Buttermilk, Sam Wheelbarrow, Peter Jackknife-, Mathusaleh Soapsude, Sylvester Littlebigfellow, Joshua Rundownhill, Billy Greencheesewax, and Miss Take, Miss Cellane, Sal Vation, and all other popular authors, too numerous to mention.
A bolition of the Grand Jury in Michigan.
The Detroit Free Press says, the act providing for the trial of criminals by information goes into effect sixty dacs after the 12th of February, at which time it became a law. This law virtually abolishes the Grand Jury* which has for so long exercised its inquisitorial functions, reserving for the Circuit Judge power to call it into session whenever special cases need its aid. All cases are to be examined before a Justice of the Peace*, and by them co mitted directly to the higher courts, instead of indictments, as has been previously < one. o<7”l’he great center iron tube of the Victoria bridge, at Montreal, was completed in March, by meansofa staging built on the ice underneath. It wide, and 22 feet high, elevated 60 feet above the level of the river, which allows passage under itot the steamboats, and other craft of that vicinity. Youmg Mem Beware. —At the Columbia Court in Wisconsin, in an action between Maria Benedict plaintiff, against George Hollingsworth defendant, a verdict of fifteen hundred dollars was rendered in favor of the plaintiff for breech of promise of marriage. OfjTA youn lady, at a party some time since, rem irked to a female friend: ‘I can’t think what induces young men to drink to such recess when they know it is so conjurious to their institution!’
