Miscellaneous. JOE nOWEKS’ WEDfilSf The county gs , “away up in the mountains,” boasts of one of the best judges in California. On the be nch he 4 is firm, decided and prompt, not caring the snap of his finger for the applause of friends or the mutterings of enemies. lie is, perhaps, th:- in :et devoted man to law in all creatio n. <> has his head so full of what he to:, s “judicial talk*” that he not tinfrequently finds himself making learned charges and passing sentence out side of the court room. On a recent occasion, the judge was tallied on to exercise the “power and authority -in him vested,” in the case of a young couple, who desired to have their hearts united in the holy bands of wedlock. Of course he consented to perform the pi asing duty* and on the appointed evening was*promptly on hand, at the house where the affair was Jo come off. The room was crowded by the beauty and fashion of the town, and - none looked more dignified or happy than the judge himself, who was dressed within an inch of iiis life. It is customary on occasions of the kind referred to,for the.good folks of the- mountain town to pass around the wine quite freely,; they consider it no harm for one to manifest his interest in the. joyous event of getting “lively.” The judge is an ardent lover gs the fair sex,- having* in the course of his life Jed the,'third one t.u the altar. To use; his own language, lie is a “great believer in weddings,”, an i that he should become a fittie mellow amid the glorious scenes of the even'iig, was not to be wondered at- by tho.-e who knew him intimately.' lie had the weakness of all good judges. lie would take his ‘•tod.” The wine had passed round and round, the music had ceased. The time for making Joseph Bowers and-Nancy Harkens one had arrived.,Every heart throbbed with.the. most pleasurable emotion. The voung 'gentle.men desired to know how ‘Joe’ would stand it, and the young ladies were anxious to see ■ how ‘Nance’ would suffer the awful shock. Others, again, who had closely observed the) turn of .affairs during .the evening, fixed their attention upon the judge, to see how he would ciinie out of the scrape. At length the trying moment was. announced. The judge arose very cautiously from the chair which he had occupied in one corner of the room, and existing his eye over the company, lie recognized tiie sheriff of the county, u ho was present as an invited guest. The judge had imbibed just enough to make him forget the nature of the' business. liewas full of his ‘judicial talk,’ and required nothing hut the presence of the sheriff to start him. Looking sternly at the officer,he shouted: ‘Mr. Sheriff, open the court, and call them to order!-’
A. general twit.tor‘followed this command, in the midst ol which the sherili’ took the ‘court’ gently hv the artn, and led him to his seat in the corner, at the. same time informing the august- personage of his mistake. Everything now hid fair for a pleasant arid sudden termination of the affair., until another annoyance, which was nothing less than? the absence of the bridegroom was »observed. It turned out that he had just stepped across the street to join his friends in a parting drink—hut before his return, soijte coldblooded wag had whispered into the car of our foggy judge, the cause of ‘delay in the proceedings. ? Instantly the chair in the corner moved, and in that direction all eyes were fixed. f ‘Mr. Sheriff,’ slowly drawled the judge, ‘bring Joe into court >n a supenuf’—the judge had his own way of pronouncing the word—then addressing, the bride, who stood in the foreground, and hung her head in confusion, ho added: .‘I sp se You're the plaintiff 1 . Well, on’t take on. ';tln mice nee and virtue will be protected by ibis here court.’ This was the saddest blunderof ail. The judgb was again made to see his 'mistake, and would have been considerably set back, bail it not been lor a corrective hi the shape of ‘forty drops of the critter,' 4 which he instantly applied. In a few moments all was ready in right, down earnest. The bridegroom had arrived, full of joy. The bride in ‘gorgeous array’ stood at his side. The company pressed i >r-. ward. The excitement was inter se. The judge-never looked so dignified in his life. He evidently felt every inch a judge. |‘J-J-oe B-B-o-w-b-r-s,’ commenced the man of the law, in that distressing style of speech with which lie was invariably troubled when] under the influence of li.juor-. t‘J-J-o-e B-B-o-w-e-r-s, stand up, Have y-y-you anything to s-s-ay w-w-why sentence— ’ ‘Stop, stop, stop, judge,’ shouted the slieritf, from the hack part of the room. ‘You are not going to hang the man, hut many him.’ The judge drew a long breath, and winked rapidly, but stood his ground well. Recovering himself, he proceeded: ‘J-J-oe B-B-Bowers, do y-y-you t-t-take Nancy H-11-llarkins for y-y-your wife, so h-e-help y-y-you God. 1 ’ This was a toleruble effort, and Joo noddied arise uU
‘N-N-Nancy H-11-Harkins, 1t remains for this here C-L'-Court to ’ , Here the sheriff again interrupted the, judge, reminding him of the real business of the evening. ‘Miss N-Nruupy,’ resumed the judge, after -being set right! ‘d-do y-v-you t-t-take J-J-Joe B-15-Bowers: fig a husband, t-to the best of youjr knowledge and b-belief, or do you not!’ ‘ You bdV softly answered the light-hearted Nancy. The judge then took the hand - of the happy couple, and, joined them, wound up the business us follows: . ‘lt :iow°r-r-reinains for this here Court to pronounce you' J Joe B-Bu\yers, and y u, N-Nnicy Ifiarlcins, man an 1 wife; and,’. (here* the judge paused to wipe the perspiration from his face:) ‘m-m-muy the L-Lord li ,ve m-mercy oh y-y-your s,-js-souls! Sheriff, re-., move the culprits!’ The company roared. Joe and. Nancy weakened. The sheriff was taken with fa leaving. The‘ju ’ge lot himself tut in a glass of apple-jack. Taken hv file hug it was one' of - the greatest Weddings c . - witnessed.'
