Rensselaer Gazette, Volume 2, Number 30, Rensselaer, Jasper County, 17 November 1858 — THE HACK LINE. [ARTICLE]
THE HACK LINE.
We learn that Messrs. J. W. &, S. O. Duvall, who for the past five months have carried the mail between this place and Bradford, gave up the contract on Tuesday evening last to the original contractor, Mr. Helm, of Wiuamac. This was in consequence of Mr. Helm refusing to pay tliem for the services thus rendered; and now to wreak revenge for their refusing to work for nothing, he lias placed the transportation of this mail in the hands of other parties, who, we learn intends to put a line of hacks on this road, in opposition to Messrs. Duvall, with a view to break them down. In this we hope they will fail, for these men took the line wheli it was broken down —when no reliance could be placed in it at allThey stocked the road with entirely new horses, comfortable hacks, and employed none but good and experienced drivers. They succeeded, and how that the road begins to pay them for the heavy expenses thus incurred, other parties seek their ruin. If the opposition expect to keep up a reduction of fare, and a reliance on the proceeds of the mail contract, at $195 per year, they will fail, for it Is at least S4OO less than any prudent man would carry it for. Let our citizens stand by the Duvalls, who, by industry, energy |jn<l efj*moiny have succeeded in establishing the only reliable line of hacks that has ever been on this road.
