Surgical Operation on Senator Sumner.
T'lte Boston Advertiser publishes the following extract from a letter from a gentleiiian of high character in Paris, to a friend ;•■>!' Senator Sumner, dated June 17: “The opinion qf both physicians,-approved by Dr. George Hayward, of Boston, was in favor ot cauterization of the spine, in order to produce counter-lirfitatioir, aud in this your.friend Dr. Browu Sequurd, whose specially is the nervous and cerebral system, fully concurred. He] made several careiul examinations, ami came to the conclusion that there was still congestion of the integuments of the brain, as well as other abnormal conditions. When the fact was announced to Mr. Sumner, and the exact process explained of burning the neck and hack with irons at a white heat, iie at once said: ‘Try it without delay—in unyTorm, and to any extent.’ The operation was performed by Dr. Brown Sequaid, who wished Mr. Sumner to inhale chloroform. This he declined, and refusing all anodynes, went through the painful pfocess without‘U word or a wince. It lias been repeated since, and and will be again to-day for the fifth time.”
