Commodore Vanderbilt and the Isthmus Transit.
The New York Times publishes a letter from the Secretary of the American Atlantic and Pacific Ship Canal Company, which seems to explode the pretentions of Commodore Vanderbilt to the honors and the profits of the charter he is said to have obtained. From this statement it appears that in 1849 the Government of Nicaragua granted to this company the exclusive right of constructing a canal across the Isthmus; and the only condition imposed was, that it should be completed within twelve years—that is, before 1861. The charter which Vanderbilt is said to have obtained, according to this statement, is purely conditional, and does not pretend to interfere with the charter of 1849. Il merely authorizes the new company to construct the canal in case the old one fails to comply with the condition required.
