The Fort Shelling Fraud.
This alleged fraud has caused a great deal of comment throughout the newspaper press jof the country.. The factjs of the case, es developed by the testimony taken before the Congress Comnfettee, aro-brfrfly as follows: An act through Congress near the close dt President Pierce’s administration, authorising the War Department to sell any old forts not required for military purposes. Under this vague clause, Mr. Secretary Floyd. sold to Richard Shell, broker of New York, and brother of the United States Senator, to Mrs. Shell, his wife, to John G. Mather, also State Senator and Government Warehouse Man, to Frank Steele, and to one Dr. Graham, Fort Snelling and eight or ten thousand acres of adjoining land, valued at $200,000 and upward, for $90,000. The sale was made privately, and without any public notice or intimation that the property was; in market. So' far from its not being needed for military purposes, tiie late Secretary of War, Mr. D avis, |ki*(l distinctly declined to entertain proposals for its purchase under the act, becapse it waS needed for. such purposes; while the present Secretary lias also recog-.' sized the necessity lor usirtg part of it for the military service of the country. ■ It was sold in a body, and not in sections, after the usual Government Surveys, as provided by law. By tlie terms of sale, the purchasers are to have their deeds upon paying the firsjt instalment, and without a mortgage, in dire'ct* violation of Die law, which lorbids'a patent being issued for any Government lands until the entire price is paid. These being the facts in the case, the whole transaction of the sale exhibits a shocking degree of official corruption.
Horrible Murder.
On Thursduy the body of a female was discovered, partly covered with dirt and stones, in a ravine in the grove about one mile south-east-of this city. The body was so much decayed that it was impossible to recognize the features; but it was evident that thd deceased had come to her death by, violence. A deep wound was found in the temple or skull hear the left eye, and also a wound or cut in the right breast. The hapds and feet had been cut oil’ and were buried with the body. An inquest was held by Coroner Reece, and the verdict of the jury was in accordance with the above facts. Here the matter rested until Saturday, when a lady residing in the north part of the city, hearing of the linding.of the body and the inquest, waited up<m Marshal Van Auken and informed him /f the mysterious dis•appearance ol her daughter!, aged about sixteen years, gqinq three weeks previous. The marshal and the coroner had the body taken up again, and it was (identified by the "mother ana other personsj os that of the young lady who was missing. The name of the unfortunate girl was Mary Moore. Circumstances are detailed hy the mother, which leaves but little doubt that our city has been the scene of on*Tof the most shaking and diabolical numbers on record. She says that her daughter was seduced hy David Richardson, a man who has borne $i good reputation since his residence iri the city, ;tiid that she was pigiente at the time of her disappearance. Under this state of facts, Richurdson was arrested op Sunday morning by Marshal Van Auken, but as his examination has not been completed yet. we forbear giving a statement of thff evidence against him-.— Joliet Signal, May 4.
Farmers.
Adain was a farmer, while yet*in Paradise, aad, alter his fall, commanded to earn his bread by tfee sweat of his brow. Job, the honest, and, upright, and-patient, was a farmer, and his endurance lias passed into a -proverb. Socrates was a firmer, and yet .wedded to.lns calling, the glory of his immortal philosophy. St. Luke was a farmer. And divides with Prometheus the honor of subjecting the ox for the use of man. Cincinnatus was a farmer, and the noblest of them all. Burns was a farmer, and the muse found” him at the plow, and filled his soul with poetry.. Washington-was a farmer, and retired from the higjhesf earthly station to enjoy the quiet of rujraj life, and present to the world a spectacle of human greatness. To these may be added a host ot others who sought peucle and repose in the cultivation ot their mother earth; the enthusiastic Lafayette, the steadfast Picker--ng, the scholastic Jeftersoti, tie fiery Randolph, all found an El Dorado of consolation in the verdant lawns that surrounded their homesteads.
Important Utah News, if True.
The Leavenworth City <Ledger>, of the 25th ult. says: “A dispatch arrived at Fort Leavenworth on Monday night, requesting immediate reinforcement or the troops near Salt Lake. A company under Captain Anderson have had a severe engagement with a guerilla party, in which a few of the enemy were killed, and three of their own men wounded. Three companies marched yesterday to their assistance—one light battery, one heavy battery, and a company of dragoons. So it seems the war will not end in smoke, notwithstanding the predictions to that effect.” -----
{Ks"Tlie London Post of 31st ult. says: We' know that our friends across the Atlantic are rather restive of advice, even when it is tendered in the most respectful and conciliatory spirit; hut with this knowledge, we tjUll cannot refrain from stating that the protracted existence of the Mormon insureetion is a scandal and a disgrace to the authorities, executive as well as legislative, of the United States, and that it steps be not promptly and vigorously taken to resto r e the supremacy ot the law, a fatal blow may be , struck at the permanency and integrity of the nation. ’
reached Fort Leavenworth on Monday last, by express, that a band of outlaws congregated on the Little Osage, and a small detachment of" U. S. troops, under command of Capt. Anderson, had an engagement at arms. One soldier was' killed, and Capt. Anderson'was wounded in the fleshy part of the leg, and his horse killed under jiiin. A battery of four guns, hnd one or two companies of dragoons were dispatched on Tuesday to tho scene of difficulties.
