It is said that Gun cotton is a , high explosive, and is extensively ' used in naval wars. A great deal ‘ of it is made from old cotton rags. If you have sold rags within the ! last few years it is possible that a pair of your old socks have been fired at Spain, which has more affect than the Chinese stink ball. The Momence Press Reporter gives the following good advice to girl graduates: “A»d girl ' graduates, you will come home because there are no more worlds to conquer, but don’t be too hard on your ild mother. I suspect that her hands have got stained putting up tomatoes and cherries and making jam and picklesand i things. She may occasionally say "have went” when you would say "have gone,” and her verbs
may not always agree with ’the subject, but you must recollect that while you were reading essays tied with, pink ribbons she was away off at home trying to start a lot of little chickens on the straight and narrow path, and maybe her cabbage plants needed an unusual amount of coaxing, and the apple butter may have come near burning, so that it required more work than you know of to keep you in college and in bicycle suits.”
The biggest guns in the United States navy are 49 feet long and 4 feet in diameter at the largest part big enough for a man to crawl into and weigh 135,500 pounds, or thereabouts. The powder used is brown. A charge for the bigest guns weighs 51X) pounds, and is hoisted to the breech by a derrick, the powder being sewed up in burlap bags. It costs SS(X) every time one of the big guns on board a ship is fired. A big battleship has on board an electric plant capable of lighting a town of S,(XX) inhabitants. The boilers of the lowa have a heating surface of 8 acres and hold 30 tons of water. The Indiana could lie outside Sandy Hook and throw 1200 pound shots into New York at the rate of four per minute.—Monticello Deni.
