C. A. Roberts has just received a lot of new buggies and carriages. Nellie Hopkins is learning the intricacies of bicycie riding. Blackford will hold memorial services at that place next Monday. A Sons of Veteran Lodge will be instituted at Blackford in the near future. David Nowles’ new residence near the depot is rapidly approaching completion. Rev. Middleton will preach at Egypt school house, Jordan tp., next Sunday at 2:30 p. m. A nearly new Deering binder for sale. Call on or address Henry Hautbaum Virgie. Ind. A. M. Sweney of Hebron was in the city Tuesday and Wednesday on business. He is a brother-in-law of George O. Stimble of Wheatfield. Mrs. Elizabeth Bedford was initiated into the Woman’s Relief Corps Monday afternoon. She is 82 years old and probably the oldest woman ever initiated into any secret order in Indiana. Jerome Herff of Miami county will be a candidate for Auditor of State before the Democratic State Convention. -He is well qualified to fulfill the duties of ' the office and a thorough Democrat. He is a particular friend of our fellow^,townsman, J. C. Chilcote.

The Sunday School convention at Wheatfield last Sunday was a decided success. The attendance was large and an interesting program rendered. C. E. Faris, county secretary was present and made an interesting talk. S. D. Clark of Stouttberg was elected as president for the ensuing year. Last Wednesday evening occurred the wedding of Mr. Alfredda Phillips the popular clerk Ellis & Murray’s store and Robinson, daughter of G. 'M. Robinson and wife. Miss Robinson is one of the most popular young ladies of our city and has for two or three years past occupied the responsible position of bookkeeper at A. McCoy & Co.’s Bank. Marybelle Purcupile and Lorine Vanatta acted as bridesmaids and C. C. Warner and George Hopkins as groomsmen. Mayor T. J. McCoy j officiated. Those present at the wedding from abroad were Misses Mollie Ward, Nellie Failing, Madge j Robinson and Mr. Bernie Goodman of Monticello: Mr. and Mrs. Vanatta and Miss Vanatta of Fowler. The war with Spain is said to be i"a war in the interest of humanity.’’ Yet the Cubans in whose interest this country has taken up ; arms are being starved by the thousands, by the peaceful blocked I»licy of the administration. Under the policy now pursued the United States is unable to furnish the Cubans provisions and the Spaniards have taken possession of what had been stored for their use. ! Now in the interest of humanity the United States should either raise the blockade or capture the island or furnish the Cubans in focal in some other way and do it soon or when they do capture the island the Cuban people will be extinct.
