object that if he can save the Union without overthrowing slavery, he will do o, and il it heroines necri-sary to destroy slavery to ?ave the Union, it will be jdon;. We do not consider this j definitely setting forth what Mr. j Lincoln will do with tdivery, as j hin st U'iiicnt contain a broad reservation, but the legitimate inference to be drawn from his re marks it, that bUvery will be spired, if the Union can be b.aved without disturbing it, and that its prct.er.ivti on or destruction dcends upon whatever exigencies that may arie in the progress ol the war. The President reserves to himself the determination ol this question, and he will be guided in making up his decision by the circumstances of the case. As to whether he reallv wishes to ce slavery perbh amid the mischief it his created, or to see it pre?ervd, Iiis language leaves us ir blissful ignorance, but we infer that he designs to prosecute the war tor the suppression of the rebellion without regard to whai may become of slavery, and that, no far as his policy is concerned, he regards the destruc tion or j rraervation of slavery with perfect indi (ference. We must confess that the position id not i hiracte-ired by a comprehensive statesmanship or enlarged views ol philanthropy, arid is nut an ari'iouncmcnt ot policy as we might expect from the head of a great Iree republic upon a question involving the rights ol bO vast a number ol people, and the bet interests of a great nation.
