No such barrier exists; on the contrary, nature affords the most remarkable facilities for this great enterprise, by tlie way of the Oswego and Oneida rivers, the Oneida lake, and the Mohawk river. From Oswego lo Uticn, about one half tlie distance, the proposed route has been carefully surveyed by E. F. Johnson, esquire, fan able engineer, whose report has been laid before the legislature of this state and printed. Tlie

distance of the route between these two places is ninety two miles, of which fifty six miles is now a navigable channel, through the Oswego and Oneida rivers, and Oneida lake,

adapted to steamboats of the largest class, and requiiing little if any improvement from the hand of art. For the residue of the distance, the country lies very favorable for the work. According lo the estimate of Mr. Johnson, the proposed steamboat canal.adapted to the craft of tlie great lakes, can be constructed to Utica, (one half the way from Lake Ontario to the Hudson,) for the comparatively trifling sum of $1,131,989, exclusive of the feeder. The rest of the route must of course be through the valley of the Mohawk, or the channel of that river itself.
