RAIL ROAD SURVEYS. The parly of engineers engaged in thesur

ey of the Madison, Indianapolis and Lafayette rail road, reached this place on the 14th inst., having terminated their operations in the

held. We learn that after having examined the route via Danville and Crawfordsville, as required by the law, a line was run, in conformity with instructions from Col. Stansbuiy, direct from Lafayette to this place. The country is represented as remarkably favorable.

Two p-uiios have been placed upon th road from New Albany to Vincennes, an

vere -vigorously prosecuting their examinations when I ist Ivard from.

Tlx survey from Columbus to Jefierson-

vrilo, has demonstrated the entire practicability of constructing a road between those points. The par'y exp ct to finish by the end of the present month. They were at Vienna on the 4ih inst. When colonel Stansbury's report upon these various, routes shall have been presented to the legislature, the country will be in possession of a mass of information which cannot fail to be extremely valuable in all time to come, Indiana Journal.

Ship canal. The Niagnra Courier states, that the United States engineers who have recently examined the route for a proposed -ship canal round the falls of Niarara, find it quite practicable. The cost will be much less than was anticipated.

New Orlea)i$, August 22. The engineers have returned from the survey of a route (or

lhe railroad hence to Nashville. The cost of

the survey is $25,000. The engineers have surveys of three routes, differing very little in distance Trom each other, and very little in extent. The best is supposed to be that passing within eight miles of Holmesville, thence passing onward about one hundred east of the Mississippi, and running about fifty miles west of Columbus. The distance to Nashville will be about 480 or 490 miles. The route pisses through a fertile cotton region, and is likely to obtain the sanction and support of the Mississippians, as being well adapted for all their wants, and admitting lateral rail roads in every direction.

JUST VIEWS. From a charge, by judge Cranch, to the grand jury of the district of Columbia. I congratulate you, gentlemen, that while some parts of our country have been in a state of excitement, and self-constituted associations, deeming the law to be defective, or too -mild, er too slow in its operation, have usurp

ed the functions of the regular tribunals of

justice, this town and country have remained in peace and tranquility, under the mild and beneficent protection of the laws. It is better that one or two offenders should escape punishment, than that many should offend by punishing them without lawful authority. If any number of individuals can thus assume judicial functions, and dispense punishments there is no security for our projierty or our lives. When liberty degenerates into licen tiousness and anarchy, there is but one step to despotism and it is belter to live under the dominion of a single despot, than under that of a mob. Gentlemen, it is our duty to see that the laws are well nud faithfully executed, and hat the rights of the humblest individual are protected, not only when lie is innocent, but when he has offended. He has a right to a fiir and impartial trial, and should not be
