An eye to the main chance. An old man riding on a sled, inquired of the youth astr.de the gray that dragged it, as they came to Kackoon, if he could gel over without wetin his feet : the answer was yes, keep them well up, on the top of the runners; and he drove ahead, seining the nethermost man through the water, fisherman-like. A justice in a neighboring township, being advised that his re election wasdoubtlul, said that if they turned him out he would deprive them of the use of some of his stock cattle: the hint took effect, and he retains his ofiice.

FOR THE RECORD. TO THE POET. 'Full many a flower is doomed to waste Its sweetness on the air' And this would surely be my case Without thy timely care. Thou art a Bee, to treasure up Each intellectual pern, To hum around each flower, and sup The sweets from each of them. But who is this? Ye mountains, hills, Valleys, trees, and purling rillsBegin the song of praise rejoice Let every nation hear your voice. Another star has risen here, A sign that brighter days are near: He is a "Patriot," good and true, And, doubtless, a good soldier too: For sure a field ten acres square, And filled with soldiers brave, Needs but his mighty spirit there, To give each man a grave. snstainino the nreat and fundamental princi-

o o B 1 pies of democracy, as taught in the day? of Jefferson and Madison, our course will be firm and undeviating opposing in every shape and under all circumstances, encroachments upon the rights of the people or the reserved rights of the States, proceeding from whatever source. Such are our general political principles. We are opposed to consolidation. We are opposed to a central power trammeling, by means of its scattered retainers , the free action of the people, and corrupting the purity of the elective franchise, in the individual States. Considering the enormous claims

set up by the present Chief Magistrate to vest in himself the whole functions of the general

government, and the undisguised attempt to

appoint his successor through the abuse oi the patronage and power entrusted in his hands, we are alarmed for the safety of our republican institutions. The Journal and Sentinel, then, will be decided in its opposi-

tion to the candidate tor the succession brought forward under these auspices, and vclin has nuhliclv announced his intention, if

elected, of "treading in the footsteps" of the present executive, and carrying out "the mea-

sures so gloriously begun. " uenevmg uku a formidable combination of the office holders

w of the general government is already ettected,

to usurp power trom the hands oi me peopie, and, from being the servants of the people, to constitute themselves their masters, in order to their own permanent establishment in office, we shall oppose this office holders' party and their candidates for the presidency and vice presidency, viz; Martin Van Buren and Richard M. "Johnson, nominated by their convention lately assembled in Baltimore. On the value to the public of an independent tress, conducted on the principles herein set forth, it is unnecessary to dilate. Having nothing to expect from the general or state government, it is to our fellow citizens throu about the state, and generally, we must

look for patronage. Kelying on men p,.- ,

ism, as wen as ineir miuwiuu6o w.-v vany other) paper can be effective, in a career of usefulness, only as it is adequately sustained, we submit our views to the consideration , of an intelligent public. The Journal and Sentinel is published once a week generally, and semi-weekly during the session of the state legislature, on a larae sheet, (fine paper and new and clear ivrxj,) at two dollars and fifty cents per annum in advance, or three dollars at the end of the year. The price for the session only, is one dollar in advance. Columbus, October , 1 835. -TCVTOTICE is hereby given to the public, Py that the undersigned will offer for sale, on Friday, the 23d day of October inst , commencing at ten o'clock A. M. of said day, at the late residence of Joseph Nutt, deceased, all the personal property of said deceased, such as horses, hogs, cattle, sheep, one arge

road wagon, wheat, oats, and nay in uj , corn in the field, household and kitchen fur-
