TRUTH AND SINCERITY. .... lal 1 "We should labor to excite in children a tietestation of all that is mean, cunnmn or false, nnd to inspire them w i'h a spirit of openness, honor and Candor, making lin ni feel how no ble it is not merely to s ak the teath, but to speak the simple unaltered truth, whether it tell for or agdnst ihemsi bes. Rut to effect this, our example must undorm'y concur with our instructions. Our wlnle behmour to them should be fair without aitificc. We should never deceive them, n-ver employ cunnina to gain our ends, or to .-pare present trouble. For instance, to assure a child that the medicine he is to take is pleasant, when it 13 not so. Artifice is generally detected even by children. There is much in the old proverb, "a cunning lock helps but once, and hinders ever after.' Great caution is required in tmkmg promises; but when made, children should see that we are strict in performing them; or word passed must not be broken. The meanuess ot tale-Bearing and detraction should be strongly impressed, upon the mind in early life: and children reminded, that not only duty, but a sense of honor should lead them not to speak any thing of an absent person, which they would not speak were he present. If we have grounds to suppose a child gudtv of misconduct, it is better to ascertain the truth bv our own observation, evidence of others than by forcing confession from himself. Yet sometimes it may be necessary to question him m order to find out the certainty. This must be done with great caution, not with that vehemance and nurry so commun.y employed on such occasions, oui wim caim nnd a faction: cautioning bun against an swerin in haste; reminding him oflhe im-. yortaucs and liappy consequence of speaking
the truth; of our willingness to lergivo, it in freely confess his fault , nnd shows himself uprinlit Hint honorable in ri.iulnrt
And to establish a htbitual regard to the TfPY virtue ot a writ of issued principle of honesty, children should not Imm JW from the ott.ee of the Clerk of the C.rpennitted to pick up the smallest article w, h-i ' Cnrt vf Montgomery county, to me out iuquir.nu to whom ,t belongs. A WORK devoted exclusively fo the great object of promoting the canso of Wes'ern Agriculture, taking a general view of the present condition and future prospects of the farming interesis, is at this time and in this country, a matter of much importance. Indiana, from Iut local situation, from the fi riiiity of her soil, must look to agriculture as the great source of her wealth. Indeed, in almost any country, it is the farming interest which sustains and upholds commerce, gives employment, to the mechanic, nnd ad!s to the wealth ?md prosperity of the merchant. It is a science which cannot bo too wvll understood, or 'oo much investig.itd.
