The Court of Common PIe will commence its tension in this place on next MoutUr. Disappointment. On Moti Uy evening Ut the prospect for r.in wan thought to be very encouraging. Every Loir wa iu high pirit. For more than ten Jays the mercury in the thermometers ranged from 95 to 103. The air, when any
of it was atir, wat ai hot as if direct
rem a heated furnace. Corn Llades
xSrre twisted up like cigars, and veg
etation of almost every kind were ufferiW as badly as could well e imÄgJnpd. Hence the anxiety for rain; but it did not come, only a small prinlilc. Tuesday the appearances were itill favorable for rain; but by some mysterious management of the rain cards, every cloud gave us the go by. To-day ( Wednesday) the weather ii cooler, and no prospect of rain. -. Freight Cur Darned up. On Tuesday night last as the freight train was goiug east a car canght fire a hört distance from this place, and Ly the time the train reached here it was no far gone that it was impos.siblo to save it. The car was loaded with tnei meat, cow bells, scythe atones and old Dourbon whisky the latter article being very nicely put up in bottles. Seme of our citizens being attracted Ly the light, went to the scene of burning, where they found the car given up to the greedy tlames. Wc understand that a small quantity of meat was unreel, which was, by permission, judiciously appropriated. The car was
hipped from Louisville. Ksca a Coming Down Stair. The tailor shop of Thomas Ward, which has for ko long a time been up stairs, over the hardware store, ha" finally found its way down stairs into a room just fitted np and prepared for that especial purpose, which, for neatness and comfort,, is unsurpassed in
our town. G. W. Hill continues to represent th hhop in the way of cutting, making and selling, where ha may bo found during business hour ready and willing to show to customers a wcllKelcctcd fctock of gentlemen's dress goods, which, fur variety and neatr;ss of styles, reasonableness of prices, etc., can not fail to pay for an examination. Shop north of the court house, between the hardware store and X. II. Ward' saddler rhop.

Mn. Kmtor You will announce to
your leaders that the Hon. Caleb B. Smith, recently of Cincinnati, has ac

Randolph County Agricultural Society, at the Annual Fair, on the 7th of October. It is needless to say any thing in commendation of Mr. Smith, as mot
of our citizens ate acquainted with him, and will anticipate a rich and instructive intellectual treat on that occatdoti. H. H. Nr.tr.

We have not much acquaintance with tho
fair ladv who has been so bolJ as to take
unto herself the management of thc larjest "Devil" iu our office, but we ftel assured that she must have a brave heart and true cour.ijre or else she would not voluntarily hive assumed such a relation. We trust that now, if never before, the "woman'

i:ieetIon of Directors of t'nion Christian College. A meeting of the stockholders of
the above-named institution will be held at Farmlaud on the second Tues Any (i)th) of August to elect directors. This college start under verv favoraLie auspices. The friendtf of the. institution have already a good seminary building in which the primary department will soon be put in operation. The colfogi building will soon be put under contract, and will be pushed to a speedy completion. It is located in Mcrom, Sullivan County. The citizens of that place donated 8o5,OO0 to the enterprise. This certainly speaks well for the liberality of tho place. The location is represented as being every way desirable, and all the surroundings attractive. Tho college site and grounds contain thirtylive acres. The scholarship system, which usually for a long time oppresset colleges, has been happily avoided. - a) - Improvement Needed.
The guttering on tho south side of
Franklin street is to high in ono or twa places as to prevent tho water
from running ofT. Hcnco in front of
the post office and in that locality, the trater has stood so long that it smells offensive. A very littlo work would remedy the matter, and it ought to bo
done.
A good shampooning, and a nice,
aiy shave, are not only necessary
but indispensablo operations this hot
weather. Sylvester Buckner, whose
hop is two doors north (up stairs) of
tho Jocrxal office, is prepared to ad
minister these little comforts in the
most satisfactory manner.
Winchester, at various times during the last ten years, has been favored
with numerous barlers, but the citi
20ns have never before been blessed
with one who attends so closely to
business as does Mr. Buckner. He is II the time sober, shaves you quickly
and easily. Give him a call.

Godey's Lady's Book for Augtist is received. This is ono of the few magazine's of our day that keeps on the "even tenor of its way," always full of interesting stories and delightful gems. But the engravings and fashion plates of this number are, wo think, unusually beautiful. Terms, $3 per year. Subscribers to the Journal can be furnished with this magazine at '2 per year. Address L. A rtoI!crI!or on n Tour. Thc Cleveland Herald roller-boy in countiy printing offices called the "devil" got permission last week to join an excurbion party on a lake steamer, but he forgot to put money in his purso before he went abroad,
and tho result was the Captain had to chalk Roller's hat. He sent back his
experience in tho shape of a letter,
from which we make an extract, as a solemn warning to all other roller
boys: Calling at once upon Captain Kvans, and frankly owning that I hadn't tho first red for expenses, the genor-ous-hcatted old fellow exclaimed, "Never mind, my boy! wo won't go to the trouble of putting you on shore. Stow yourself away where it is most convenient, and we'll tako you back to Cleveland to-morrow free of charge." Perching myself on a barrel of new tut nip near the ticket-offi -o. my ears were suddenly inieiested by the hallbreathing, half-extdosivo tones of a man's voice applying for tickets who appeared to fear that he should be heard by some one Inside tin clerk. "I ay," he exclaimed, "nu and my wife have just been married, and I'm looking for Vommodat ions." "Looking for a beith?" hastily inquired the busy ch'rk, passing tickets out to another customer. "A Urthf thunder! no," gasped the astonished man, "we haint but just got married! I want a pla 'e to htay
in au night; a room, you know, and and a b-d." "Ah! yes, certainly," replied the polite clerk, looking as if .something salt had got into his eve, you shall
have th tost that the boat afford; we always look out for the comfott of wedding parties." On the arrival of the boat at Detroit I sauntered up town to look for work in some of the offices, but was told by the editor of a daily paper that the city wan already so full of devils that delegates from Cleveland would stand no ort of chance. I therefore tart for home in the inorniug. Di:CEAR OK CoNt.IlEsSMEN Ht.F.CT. Three of the members of Congressmen elected to the next House of Representatives havedied, viz: Hon.Thos'. L.
