The great eclipse came off, as per announcmcnt. on Saturday afternoon. Although it was not total here, it far exceeded in beauty and effect the expectations of the most sanguine. At the time of the greatest darkness the landscape had a most ghastly and unearthly appcaranoc. The air grow chill, chickens west to roost, and every th ng happened just about as the astronomers had predicted. The most favorably point in this state for observ-1 f ing the eclipse was at Terre Haute. We clip a very graphic description of the event from the Indianapolis Sentinel, one of whose editors went to Terre liaute for the express purpose of " working matters up."
