It is seldom that we use the columns of this paper to puff or notice the thousand and one articles known a patent medicines. M. C. Republican. Who says " use Barrett's ? " Yaxi-ow river is in an "interesting situation," but no fears are apprehended at present, as the volume seems to be on the decrease . Iruom of the mud, reminds us that some of our friends from '.he " thick woods " report the roads to be rather soft though not bad. Here in town they are in No. 1 condition, so they say. Wh have received a notice from Hon. Jasper Packard, that he will send a small package of garden seeds to pny person who writes him that he desir it. His successor is a Mr. Bradley, with whom we are unacquaint ed . VKt orirEPisM. One of the latest fe its of velocipede rvanipulation occurred in Dickson's hardware store a few days since. A youth of about 150 pounua avoirdupois, got astride the creature and proceeded to move off, when sud lenly it took an entirely original idea, and turned right-about, running one handle through a glass show-case which happened to be just where the " mashcen " wanted to put up. That youth rfgan1.? velocipedes as a humbug and unmitigated nuisance. The Goshen road, just north cf the fair ground is in a deplorable condition, the water standing over the road about four feet deep for a distance of nearly twenty rods. This is a road of considerable importance, and the trade passing over it to Plymouth deserves better treatment. How it can be repaired we will not say, but it should be looked to at once. The high water occasioned a little "cir cumstance" on the C. C. & L. railroad on Tuaday last, by washing a A-ay about fifteen feet of the grade directly north of Yellow river. The rails having nothing to reBton "give in," making a small break in the mail, which unper the prompt attention of Mr. Herrick, occasioned a delay of but about three hours. We have received a large number of magazines for April which we are unable to give notices of. If the publishers will have patience until the water goes down in the river, the roads dry up a little, startling accidents cease happening in our community for a few days, and locals get scarce, we will try and do them justice, if that will be satisfactory ; if not, why then not. The Phrenological Journal for April, contains the portraits and biographies of Harvey P. Pect, LL. D., the eminent instructor of the deaf and dumb ; Ja.ncs T. Rrady, the distinguished lawyer ; Henry D. Rarron, the legislator ; nenry Frank, the Jewish publisher; besides sketches und illustrated articles on Hiram Powers and John Stuart Mill; Phrenology and Religion ; Fish Culture, with nine engravings ; Napcleon's head ; the Planchettc Mystery ; Crescendo, an illustrated Poem; Japanese houses j Is there an opea Polar sea I Mnsis, Price $3 a year or 30 cts. a number. Yillow River vs. Lowland But few streams, more classic but less notorious, can swell and splurge and recover their tranquility in the incomparable short time usually occupied by Yellow river. A mere shower no soener descends than it is gathered up, and thrown into the Kankakee in almost an hour. The denizens of east Plymouth are just at present submerged. It could not surpisc any one should the inhabitants in that vicinity awaken some dreary morn and discover themselves ver- dead from the effects of strangulation in the watery element. In our humble estimation there are more desirable places in the world for dwellings than in that particular plat. It should have been scooped out and converted into a skating rink or a fish pond, or zoological resort for amphibious tribes, either use for which it is admirably adapted. Why a bridge was constructed across the main channel in that region, we are at a loss to understand ; the bridge should have extended to Michigan street, or the locality provided with ferry-boats. No doubt lots in that region could be filled with imported earth at a cost of a few thousand dollars each, the money could be procured by exporting fish, alligators and frogs, or sale of cows, hogs and chickens annually drowned thereabout. If this plan should prove unavailing, it might be well to raise a few more "levys." But above all, don't compel suffering humanity to take that route, by neglecting the bridge one block above it. This matter of building bridges in the most awkward out of-t he -way places, for the purpose of rendering valuable valueless property, is poor economy. Let the cards of warning be removed from the old bridge, its timbers strengthened, and travel once more resumed on that beautiful and capacious street, and not compel travelers, business men, and pleasure seekers to pursue the blind-alley nowopened andjcalled a street, havingno side
walk, narrow, dirty, muddy, and some of the time overflowed, at the end of which inundation, mud and slime prevails. How our town authorities could be induced to extend Laporte street and stop trawl on Garro street, is a profound mysterv. True it is certain interested men assisted in the construction f the Laporte street bridge, yet equally true it is that the corporation assisted in this scheme to promote individual interests of property owners. No public benefit arises from this awkward change of base, but beauty, convenience and general harmony are outraged. There is a balance of power in the political element of this corporation, which can compel the board of trustees to seek the general ins tead of individual welfare pre sented for their consideration. We find that the general sentiment seconds this plea to have travel opened on Garro st., and when the bridge is rendered passable experience will show which route is preferred.
