STEAMBOAT DISASTER.
lerriDic kins ;ü oia lite unto 1 tThe telegraph this morning fDee. 7. gives the details of they collision and lestruction of two of the finest steamers on the Ohio river, with a fearful lose of life. The accident, if it may be so termed, ' , , -i , j- , ,.,.., nr Urn s Landin nbnur tv.ci oc cur v'V Liven is "a mistake in the signal." - Tt seems strange that soeh Collision should have occurred upon a Btreatu where there is ample room fur the tcattcn to Ut. puM.1 each otW -ithont thn.lightlesl dancetof o.Let. Tel it u hinsi .cd i l .1 . I I . 1 .1 . i with tlie terrible tragedy that accompanied it. The United States aud America, both double deckers, and fitted up in Beagntficent style, formed the d:iily erening line between Louis f ilia and Cincinnati, stopping at Madtsrn on. On Friday night j li at about eleven u" clock, the collision occurred, and both boats were destroyed, t is stated that in thirty seejnds after the I contact the United States Wafl a sheet of flames ao' rapidly did the fire Spread that only a few of the passengers had an opportunity to escape. The America l.it.rlit Ii im ....k wir ...1 mm fli . , .v.., ....v..., -M first dot j of her officers, the attempt to save the aasengera on the United States involved her destruction. The pilot did not leave hie post until she landed, and the Humes hod enveloped the pilot boose. The loss of life is uot definitely known, but it is estimated at seventy-five to eighty. Thirty-five women aud children perished on the United States, and, doubtless, many gentlemen were sacrificed in the vain attempt to save them. It aiusi have been a terrible scene, when the angry flames and Suffocating smoke from the burning coal oil, were fastening upon their frightened victims annd rushing them with leart'ul velocity, with the attending horrors, from time into eternity, without warning and in agonizing tortures. The mind recoils with horror when even imagining the 80000, without being aebl to realize the horrible Bufferings of the doomed. What a change carelessness or incompetency produced in a few moments. On the United States, just previous to the disaster, a party had left the ladies' cabin. where they had serenaded a newly married couple, but, alas! how soon the sceuc changed. On this steamer were several citizens of Madison, withio about an hour's distance from their homes, with families and friends awaiting their arrival, but they came not but a law of nature had been violated aud the consequences were as described. Among the number missing is Michael Steele, eldest son of Hon, M. G, Bright, and brother of the proprietor of this paper. We hope that he may have escaped, but we fear that he is oue of the victims, and doubtless, it so, he sacrificed his life in the attempt to save the helpless Women and children. BBfOMM DEPRAVHTY.
