Election of fi'afroii So inf. A correspondent of the New Vork Tribune says that an election of the most extraordinary kind lias been l.cld in Valparaiso. The ecclesiastical authorities of the city had called together the people for the purpose of choosing out of the list of saints one as patron saint and protector for this city. The election was excitiug in thc extreme, many hundred saints having ben nominated ; but Jesus Christ obtained a brilliant majority, having polled 19,946," the most holy Virgin" following with 4, Pili ; sundry odd saints putting in a disgracefully poor show, among the whole of 084. The election was closed on Sept. Grh, the result being declared on Sunday, when a sermon was preached by Senor Casanavo, and a solemn Tt Drum sun? to celebrate thc joyful event. One hundred thousand dollars a year and a new house arc proposed for Mr. and Mrs. Great The president's house is not thc best contrived mansion that could be built for a man and his wife, certainly, but a great many respectable families arc anxious to occupy it soiwiiaetaodiog its many inconveniences. Twenly-fivc thousand dollars per annum will o n ood way in paying for milk and bread ; but perhaps it is hardly adequate to all the demands of housekeeping at Wahhington just at this time. Taxes, however, arc very high, and if the odd house and piesent pay will do until the condition of thc people is a little im proved, it will help things. It is alleged that Colfax has expressed an anxious desiro that Hen. Wade should have a place in Grant's cabinet. Suppose he be selected to do all tho gov erumcnt swearing t This about the only F . a ..ia positi v hs it competent to fill.
