DO WHAT YOU CAN.
Jf you cannot on the ocean Sail among tho swiftest fleet, Rot-king on the highest bülowf, Laughing at the storm. you meet You can stand aafMBg the suilors, Anchored y. t within the hay ; You can lend a hand to help them; As they luuueh their boat away. If you arc too weak to journey Up the mountain steep and high, Xoa (an stand within the valley, While the multitude go by; You can chant in happy measure, As they slowly puss along ; Though they may forget the singer, They w il 1 nwt forget the riong. If you have not gold and silver Ever ready to command ; If you cannot tow'rd the needy Keach an ever open hand ; You can visit the afflicted, O'er the erring you can weep. You can be a true disciple Sitting at the Saviour's feet. If you cannot in the harvest Garner up the richest sheave, Many a grain both ripe and golden Will the carelees reapers leave ; Go and glean among the briars, Growing rank against the wall, For it may be that their shadow Hides the heaviest wheat of all. If you cannot in the conflict Trove yourself a soldier true If, where lire and smoke are thickest, There's no work for you to do When the battle -field is silent, You can go with careful tread, You can bear away the wounded, You can cover up the dead. Do not, then, stand idly waiting For some greater work to do ; Fortune is a lazy goddessShe will nercr come to you. Go and toil in any vineyard, Do not fear to do or dare, If you want a field of labor You can find it anywhere. lluslilng HI si ory. In view of the fact that the republicans propose to nominate Reuben E. Fenton, Governor of New York, as candidate for the vice presidency, some of hU friends ure hushing a bit of his early history which would damage him with the people, but not among republican politicians. The facts are these : Some years since Mr, Fenton was an occupant of the jail at Albany, New York, for a long time, charged with stealing one thousand dollars, He had been entrusted with that sum to deliver to a prominent firm in Albany. He gave out that he had been robbed, told a big yarn suited to the occasion, b'omo parties believed him, but the man who was waiting for the money did not. An ofScer wa engaged and the money was found secreted in Fenton 's bed, with the exception cf a fow dollars which he had used. He was confined in jail the theft was settled by his relations and he ia timo became the republican governor ol the empire state. These facts his fricuds ore now endeavoring to hush, and we hope thoy will succeed, for it is bad for the great moral party to run such a candidate whose oar'y history is so checkered. Democrats would say such a man was a thief, and the people might object to votin. j for such a man, as they rather desire some change in the management cf affairs. "ve have stood a clown and a Moses but we do not care to havo a drunkard and a thief to rule over us. La Crosse Democrat. Kx-Gov. Eyre, cf Jamaica hasbecn ordered under arrest in London on a charge of illegally proclaiming martial law during the negro rebellion in that island, during which time George Win. Gordon, a noted bluek fementeref mischief, was executed. It is intended in this way to test the unusual measure resorted to by Gov. Erye to 8U press the insurrection. Ve do not suppose any effort will be made to bring to justico the officials who unlawfully proclaimed and enforced martial law in the Uuitcd States, not only during the time of our civil war, but even now, years after the war has been brought to a close. This probably arises from the fact that the persona tried and executed were white men and women, and not negroes, like the Jamaica rebels. If a negro had be executed under martial law, the officer who had orlered thecoutt martial would probably be pursued and larassed with the samo pertinacity that the Goldwin Smith and Newman HaU crowd are now exhibiting toward Eyre.
