A Remarkable Discovery is KANSAS. At Nelawaka,in Kansas, in digging a well, pieces of charred timber were found at the depth of 6) feet. The Atchison Patriot mjs tüey were imbedded in a bed of earth formed of clay niised with smooth eand and gravel. Between th3 surface of the earth and these deposit the workmen had o dig through beds of flay of the closest texture and hardest compaction; as well as layers of limestone. One of these pieces of timber shows evidence that cannot be doubted of haying been cut with a sharp instrument. This wae found at a depth of 62 feet. It, as well as some other places, is well preserved, and tells its own convincing, yet brief tory of a former people and a former civilization. But the cod is not yet. The workmen , in their laborious progress, have reached a depth of 70 feet, and are digging through a stratum of black loam. of soil posesaing all tho elements of fertility, and which was "dry land" before the waters deluged it and swept over it as with the besom of destruction. In this loam, th original surface of the earth, if we dare hazard such an expression, have been found the roots of the trees which grew and flourished in the virgin foil; trees and shrubbery which spread their foliage, and bore their fruit ages and tens of ages before the era at which profane history begins its record.

Misunderstood tiie Tkxt. A worthy deacon hired a journeyman fanner from a neighboring town for tue summer, and induced him although he was unaccustomed to church going to accompany tho family to church on the first Sabbath of hi. stay. Upon their return to the deacon's house, he asked the hired man how he liked the Dreacliinsr. He renlied : "I don't like to hear any minister preach j L "I am sure you heard no politics to day," said the deacon. 'I am sure that I did." replied the man Mentioti the i-asjagca," aaid the dca-! con. UI will. He Slid, 'If tho democrats scarcely arc saved, where will the rei ublicaos appear 7 1 "Ah," said the deacon, "you mistake. These were the words 'If the righteous scarcely are aaveJ, how will the ungodly and the wicked appear ? 1 " "Oh, yes," said the man. "ho might hare used thoso words, but 1 kuew deuced well what ke meant." Somo Btartling disclosures are expected in ordinance committee's report showing the connection of government officers with swindling contractors, who defrauded the government out of large bums of money. The "Johnson defenders" of New York city report 23 organizations and a roll of 10,000 persona. Children do ay mighty ahrcwd things occasionally : Ma," said an inquistivo little girl, " will rich and poor folks live together when they go to heaven? " " Yes. my dear, they will all be alike there." "Then, ma, why d..n'l rich aud poor! christians associate together here : The mother did not answer. Beeciier, in alluding to the presidential chair, asks : "Can a man be tormented by office-seekers praised by parasites, teased by widowu, overrun by congress, carved and pierced by both parties, flayed by newspapers, cajoled, deceived ; and finally, tormented by a cabinet whot treat him to advice as consolatory as that; which Job received from his friends j aUU JfvU l 1 SCI U L . ITC PUUIU J "UI Aunt Susan, about seventy years of ago, . " unanimous " on man ; she says : u If all the men were taken off, she'd make arrangements fur her funera! forthwith." She also says : 11 Suppose all the men were in one country, aud all the women in another, with a big river between them. Good gracious ! what lots of poor women would be drowDcd ! " A Colorado paper says: ''Thero is great suffering in this state, because the governor obstinately refuses to sign bills of d ivorce.' And in tnother paragraph the Ba'-ne paper bays, a thousand yankeo and New York girls could get good husbands and homes iu Colorado, if they'd only come here, and no -.juestions asked." The palindrome is a line that reads aliko backward and forwird. One of the best is Adam's first observation to Evo : Madam, I'm Adam." Another is the story that Napoleon, when at St. Helena, being asked by an Eogiishmau if he could have sacked London, replied ; Able was I ere I saw Elba," the bost palindrome, probably, in the language. " Facts aro stubborn things," eaid a lawyer to a femata witness under examination. The lady replied, Yes, sir-ee, and eo are women ; and if you get anything out of me, just let me know it." M You'll be committed for contempt." H Verv well. I'll suffer justly, for I feel the utmost con tempt for every lawyer present. BcsrxEss or the Principe l Cities. A table has been published purporting to exhibit the total of the business traffic of some of the principal cities of tha union. As stated in this table, during the fiscal year ending June 30, 1867, the aggregate bnsioess traffic of New York, was $3,313,518,000 Boston 928.173,000 Philadelphia 622,097,(V)G New Orleans 526,795,(Ä0 Chicago 342,182,000 Cincinnati 213,253,000 Snn Francisco 151.366,000 Milwaukee 110,670,000 Pittsburg 80.989,000 Brooklyn Detroit 69,676,000 62,657,000 Andrew Johnson indulged in a ,-iaüiple oi rather pointed sarcasm, in a recent conversation with a Washington uewspaper correapondent. M Jefferson Davis, he said, the head and front of the rebel lion, ia not brought to trial, yet congress proposes to to try the president at once, for what kind of offence, aj compared with that of Mr. Davis, the oountry and the senate may perhaps justly decide." It is a significant fact that, since the party which demands that " trea.soo shall be made odious, "arrived at tho determination to punish their own president, the country has not heard bo much as a loyal m peep " in favor of punishing tho president of tbe sTUthera oonieitiaoy.
