Jenklu In Washington. Since the remarkable blossoming ot reporters' genius which occurred at the time of General Scott's funeral, there have been few oecassioos on which the shallow depths of the newspaper Jenkins have been fairly stirred up. The impeachment excitement however, threatens to develope repotoiial fertility and inaptitude of expression to an alarming extent. Tlio Washington c "rerpondent of the Tribune in this morning's issue ofthat paper, certainly threatens toequal the magniloquent bosh which was roused by the disease of the late lieutenant-general. He says, speaking of the debate in the boost yesterday : 11 The copperhead Phelps of Maryland, then flung himself into the impeachment torrent, to stem it, with a speech which lunged on the rottou sophism," &c. Wheo Kelley, orator of patriotism aud humanity, took the floor,
the vast audience was hushed in huDgry .. , 11.1 expectation. itn power ana Deauiy ne it a rower ana beaut v n arraigned, &c. Having got the excited Washingtonians through a Sunday of wild alarm, Jenkins puts them to bed, "with m'xnds cleared of doubts and questions," and " anticipating the character and consequences of twelve months' government of the country under honest, brave, positive, wise Ben Wade " He is good enough to continue, " If they woke again they thanked G d for His abounding goodness in giving ;he republic oue year of admintration by old Ben." This mild and devout passage is, however, but a resting place ; and with the account of yesterday's excitement, Jeukins becomes himself again. Mr. Ashley "overflows inevit ibly from the narrow confinement cf the case made by the motion to impeach, and parades in review the multiform official wickedness," &c. He tells us of Price, of Iowa, M who, if he was not an able man, with a power of compacted expression, could not have satisfied the house, as he did do, that Johnson deserved impeachment for rushing madly on his fate." Woodward, we learn, ' snaps a refusal to Washburne, who lies back in his lair waiting for a new spring at the official malefactors whom with his whole houest soul he hates and would destroy." Then. Ben. Butler, the Apostolic John of this salvation by impeachment, followed," &C and sDon spake that u admirable orator and much loved Boutwell, of Massachusetts." It is a comfort to know that If. Boutwell's " picture of the ippy influences which would follow upon this act of justice was as statesmanlike in its prediction as it was beautiful and christian in its utterance." When thi3 gifted writer reaches the description ot the taking ot the yute, it is j not too hipi praise to say that, like the fat hnv n m PipL-wioL- " ho mito nur floh creep. lie tells us : " Justice walked among all radicals, black and white, in the capitol, aod bore a naked and sharp swDrd in her hand, ami ; vras inexorable of purpose and grave.
