Cincinnati Commercial, tjtves the following ss a sample of the a -rt of "republican ; government" the radical gtve the people: - They have a republican form of government in Missouri, and have it with a vengeance. I Heard something about it the other day, which I eau not refrain from publishing, by way of illustration. Clay county. Missouri, had a voting population of 2,500 before the war. A lull regiment of these entered the federal service, and went through the entire struggle, aud wlu:t was left of it came home at the close of it. There are now about 3,000 rotors in the county. At the last election two hundred and fifty were allowed to exercise the riht of suffrage, under the test oath and registry laws. The rest, 2,750, wore excluded as "rebels," though' many of them had been all through the war on the union side! Aud the best of the joke is that the indiuidual who sat in judgment upon the loyalty of others, and excluded the 2,750 as disloyal, was himself a violent secessionist at the outbreak of the war. He is now, however, an earnest radical. Now, these are the figures that won't lie. My authority is Fr ink Blair. And this is only a specimen cx uno ttisce omnes. So all who want to bask in the sunshine of a republican form of government which h such in the literal sense that none but republicans are allowed to participate in it had better emigrate to Mis souri. It's no wonder they elected Drake to the senato out there, but it is a little attousbiug that they didu't do even worse if this were possible. Ufe in Constantinople. The shops in Constantinople, says Mark Twain, arc mere coops, mere boxes, bathrooms, closets auythinrjyou please to call them on the first floor. The Turks sit eroeft-Iegged in them, id work and trade and smoke big, lon pipes, and smell like a slaughterhouse in summer time. Crowding the narrow street in front of them are beggars wi:o beg eternally, yet never collect anything; and wonderful cripples, distorted out of all semblance of humanity, almost: vagabonds driving laden asses; porters carrying dry goods boxes as big U ! cottages on their backs ; peddlers ot grapes, hot corn, pumpkin seeds, and a hundred other things, yelling like fiends ; and sleeping placidly among the hurrying feet are the famous dogs of Constantinople. M" . . . A A Mr. tn fH . ü , 1 , ... . Ha lOVlDK rubes, and With Snowy VClls bound about their heads, that disclose on - h the eyes and a vague, shadowy notion of their features. Seen moving about far . i j vi i uway in i lie mm. uiencu ui.-ic.-i ui .iiu ..ii Bazar, they look a? the shrouded dead must have looked when they walked forth from their graves amid the storms and thunders and earthquakes that burst upon Calvary, that awful ni-ht of the ion. A street in Constantinople is a pietare which one ought to see once not ofteuer. And then there WM the gooso rauchet' a fellow who drove a hundred ireesc before him about the city, tried to soil them. Ot had a pole teu feet long, with a crv)k in the end of it, and occasionally a goo.-f i i i a a i, i L. r , , , . , .. j a hve.y break around the corner, with wings half lifted aud neck stretched to its j Utmost. The way he did it was uuiuue. lie I o : the end of the stick within six or eiht inches of a stone wall. He counted them as tin y went by. There was no shrinking that arrangement. Wl hear a ood story on the Go.port delegates to ihe radical state convention i held at Indianapolis last week. The delegation, headed by a prominent gentleman from Oranpe county, took the train on the Louisviile, New Albany and Chicago Kailr )ud at Gosport, eipeetiag to switch off at Greenoat!e Junction to Indianapolis. A short distance above (Josport the the traiu jumped the track, the train goin into the ditch, and progress was no longer to be thought, of until the train was righted up. The delegates, who started well prepared, t out perched themselves on the (feste, and amused each other by relating stories of the war and the history ot John lirowu' raid, not forgetting to tell of h'i3 latter end. At the close of each story the bottle would be passed around, and by :h time the train had been placed on the track quite a number of them were in a hipdi toned condition. When the train reached the junction the Indianrpolia train w is ready to leave, but some wagpish democratic chap sung out '"Twentyfive minutes for supper!" The delegates lost no time in rushing into the pupperroom, but had hardly got seated betöre the train left for Indianapolis. The delegates were awfully disappoint-pd-at being toll behind, aud swore vengeaw. " t the scamp who had deceived them, but ag he had left on the train they could do nothing but swear. After a long consultation they concluded to go on to Lafayette and fro'n thence to the capital in the morning, but it seems that aix of them never got away from Lafayette until after the convention had adjourned and the delegates had gone home. Y to Alhnnj L dyer. 'Papa," said a little urchin to hU father the other day, "I saw a printer go down the street Jaat now." ''Did you sonny ? Hov did you know this person wa. a printer ?" "Cause I uo, papa." "But lie might have been a carpenter, blacksmith oi shoemaker." "Oh, no, papa, he was a printer ; for he was gnawing a bone, and he had no stockings on, the crow n was out of hrs hat and Iiis coat waa nil torn. I am coatain he was a printert papa." i - Thomas Nat is painting a picture of the New York .eveuth regmeut, aud is to ttfttlfl iVr it.
