The jaatice asked one of tbem what lawyer he would have to defend him. The poor fellow, half crying, said he didn't knew anybody, and he didn't care who he bad. The other knew the ropes a little better, and expressed a preference for either II e or Co n. The justice a-ain asked the lach-' rymoso chap if he had any choice. TfJR COkJf.fEDER.ATL FLAG ON THE Ocean. -Out readers all know that the pestiiental doctrines of Mongrelism creep into nine-tenths of thc reading matter issued from the public pre?3. We must have a pure literature, without a taint of the n:gger about it, without the slightest ailli-and-molasses hue, or the present gen eration of readers will become as debauch ed fs the past. The Caucasian scries of stories now being issued by Van Evrie. Horton & Co., of The New York DayBook, are of the pure white man style, and the No. 1 which we have received, just off tho, press and ready for tho publicThe Confederate Flag on the Ocean is a capita! story, spirited, thrilling, strictly historical and patriotic. There is not a democrat in thc country who will not prize it highly as one ot the most entertaining novellettes ever written. The series will be kept up. The Annual Report of thc Board ot Trade of Eransville, Indiaoa, for 1867, with a Historical Sketch of thc City, is the title of a neat little pamphlet of 108 pages, compiled and published by tho Evaaarille Journal Company. We are lad to note the prosperity of one of tho first of Indiana's cities, as indicated in this report. Tho population of EvaDsville is estimated at 25,000. 8iLTn BAND.Tlie Republican, of last week reports the names of a number of joonfc gentlemen who have organized a republican silrer band, in this place. Thse joun gentlemen are all " fail helItmnreU wtl," and will doubtless make a fortune playing for radical pow wows in county.

Sunday School 2 p. m. The other evening a meeting was held by the republicans of' this place for the purpose of ratifying the action of our 11 trooly loil" congress in impeaching the president for attempting to remove from the war department a "loii" 5camp, whom, they themselves have no confidence in, and only arc desirous of retaining because he is jast mean enough to use as a tool to accomplish the purposes of the radical party. Siuce thc last fall elections proved so disastrous to them, they have become desperate. To be or not to be," is the question to be decided now and forever. "With Johnson as a sentinel guarding what little of the constitution they have not legislated away from him, they fear they will not be able to hold thc pjwer they have already used in such a manner that the country to-day is In a much worse condition than it was when thc last of the 30,000 of Lee's ragged and half starved soldiers laid down their guns "overpowered by force." uipenor The speeches on the occasion were "numerous and tho remarks made by tlie several individuals who conducted the mectng differed only in the ability of the speakerto express their hatred of Johnson and I their admiration of oongress. One old chap gave then an illustration of how he would put Johnson out if he were down at Washington, lie would take him by thc nap of the neck and kick him out. This sentiment " brought down the house." As the speakers were mostly a Bet of radios! asses, this argument is considered more in keeping with their principl -s than any other argument that could have been adduced. The democracy did not vote for Johnson, neither did they vote fur those who at this time compose a majority of the present " loil congress. They have given Prcsideut Johnson their good will aud encouragement whenever by his acts lie protected and defended the constitution of the United States. Further than this, he is nono of theirs. Tho very fact that he turned his coat, and abandoned the principles of thc democratic party, which he had constantly advocated up to the breaking out of thc war, was, and is sufficient evidence to thc democracy that lie is on no account to be trusted. The democracy have dabbled with policy men to their hearts content. They will have no more ot them. The man who can't show a clear record must not expect political preferment at their hands. President Johnson's cabinet is composed almost entirely f fossilized republicans. Thc generals appointed by him and confirmed by the senate, who are now resuming the military, despoflc, negio governments down south, are of the most radical type, and in fact almost every man, from Secretary Seward, who tinkles his little bell at the right baud of tho president, down to thc postmaster in our own town, arc republicans of his own choice. Thc time lias been, since he came into of fice, when he could have removed these officers and put honest men in their place?. But he didn't do it, and why? Because he was playing "good lord, good devil" to both parties, hoping the olTense he would give to one party would be overbalanced by thc praise he would get from the other party. As a natural result, ho is shorn of all his power; a criminal at the politi cal bar of a party whoso leaders regard a violation of their oath of office as a neces sity in which the public welfare is at stake. Let us hope, however, that thc " sober second thought," of the mad men who arc controlled in this matter by political hatred alone, will save the coutry from disgrace and destruction, until the coming presidential election shall relieve the country of the rabble that are now congregated about thc capital of thc nation.
