The fates appear to be against Plymouth, for some unknown cause, and arc determined to destroy u by fire." At about eleven o'clock the alarm of ': fire!" was sounded, and in au exceedingly short space of time the fire companies were at the M scene of action." The fire proved to be in the rear part of Adams and Zchncr's foundry, in the roof of the building. That the fire should have occurrred at the time it did, was most strange, from the fact that the employes were all at work in the foundry 'blasting. " and it would seem that it cou.d easily have been extinguished. From some unexplained ' cause the fire engiac was not in working order, and the building, which was perfectly dry and seasoned, was consumed in a comparative ly short space of time, with uearly all its contents, consisting of machinery, patterns, boiler and engine, etc. Tbe blaccsmith-shop of Was. Taylor, which was situated some four or five rods north of the foundry, caught fire despite the efforts of the hook-and-ladder company and the citizens, ai d was burned to the ground. Mr. Taylor saved everthing in his shop of a valuable nature. The foundry building belonged to Mr Oscar Simons of Fort Wayne, and as it vras rather a u shackly institution its loss can easily bo replaced. The loss to Messrs. Adams k Zehner is variously estimated at from $,000 to 10,000. The loss to Mr. Taylor is estimated at from $480 to 8'00. No insurance. The failure of the fire-engine to per- j form, has been the subject of severe comxneut. To lay the least, it was very proyoking, and no class felt it more acutely than the firemen themselves. That the engine was not iu fault, was demonstrated by the eape with which it played upon a pile of coke next morning belonging to the foundry. The property -bolders of the town are'all interested iu having a good fire department, and as the companies arc not full, there is a chance for all able-bud-isd men to beewmc members, and if th-y should happen to know more about the managemeut of an engine than the prosant members, the i4bojs" will be glad to ! receive instruction. Until we have a paid fire department all such unfriendly criticism ss was indulged in on lad Saturday evening should be dispelled with. Mr. Kpitor. Is it generally undor-1 stood or admitted to be etiquette for two; or mora ladiei to take up all the side-walk. I on all occasieos sua in all kinds of weather, crowding poor, unfortunate individuals of the male perfusion, and especially married 4icusses," off into the snow or mad half boot-top deep? If it is, then ws muit succumb, of course, although it is often very unpleasant. Bkxfdkt. Our friead m Benedict" should remember that ha is pettiug into the " sheer and jailer leef." and that married men peewtaa do rights which single ladies of an M uncertain" age are bound to respect. Iiow different it would be, old fellow, if you wera not in possesion of that dearest thing in life, a wife ! Leap-year would then hare some charms for you, but as it is, the dear creatures ignore you utterly. Poor fallow! There is still hope for you, however. You may wake up some fine j morning, and find yourself a widower ! I Glorious! The evil that you complain of Ti am , will then cease. Managing mammas will enltivate you, and the shiny imuiaeulatenesa of your boots will never again be de- j filed by the contact of snow and ID ud. Until that time comes, you will have to j submit, gracefully if you can, but in any ease submission will be your best "holt." Thi second series of Social Hops given bj the young gentlemen of Plymouth, will commence on Wednesday evening, January 22d, at Corbin fc Bcnson'b Hall. These hopfl are inteuded especially for the members and invited guests, and are oonducted with strict propriety; against ihem the most fastidious persons can find do objection. The entertainments are j therefore highly interesting to those who enjoy such amusement. Jo. Communicated. . Mr. Editor. I was triad to sec io the last week's Democrat, that there was some one capahle of answering questions in relation to the manner o doic" busi-
tJ the employ CS of the P. Ft. W cl C. R. V. Co. As far as tin? conductors were concerned, your Bourbon correspondent gave a correct account of them, for so far as I am acquainted with them they are gentlemen. But there are a great many who are compelled to pay the company thousands of dollars a year, who would like to know why it is that they permit some of their employes (particularly brakemen) to staud on the steps of cars and bruptly drive civil and respectable men to a forward car. where they must be annoyed with the smoke from old pipes that have, perhaps, been used for years without cleaning, and any other annoyance that may come iu their way. If you ask one of them a civil question, if he condescends to answer at all, it will be in an insolent manner. This kind of conduct has become notorious, and if you are in New York city you are a.ked why you don't take the northern roads where you can be treated with some little respect. To travel on this road you must first conclude to come in subjection to brakemen. When we leave home we have no friends but those wo pay money to, and we don't find them in the brakemen of the P. Ft. W. & C. R. W. The interest of the road very much depends on either a chango or a reformation in the brakeman. D. Good NEWS. Mr. Kditor The citizens of this town have had another exhibition of the emciency, or rather n-efficiency, of the Plymouth fire-depirtmeut. The instance I refer to is that of the burning of Adams ft Zohner's machine shop, last Saturday night. The alarm was ivon immediately after the building caught fire, and the fire engine was on the ground, and placed in position for operation in time to have extinguished the fire in three minutes, if the estimate of some present be taken as correct; but the machine icould not work, and toe owners of the burning property had the satisfaction of seeing their earnings consumed at the rate of five thousand dollars per hour, when proper care and efficiency on the part of the fire department would hare prevented their loss fr in being over one hundred dollars. This is but a repitition of the scene enacted two years ago, when the fire could have been confined to Woodward' brick, instead of burning over the entire length of the block, if the engine had been in working order, and properly managed. The citizens of this towu have paid some j thousands of dollars to properly equip the fiac department, and arc of course desirous of knowing why such poor use is made of their money. The writer horeof has no ill-feeling toward the fire department, or the members of it; but, od the contrary, is desirou that they may prove themselves worthy of the confidene heretofore reposed in them by the people of Plymouth. I do not. think the firemen of Piy mouth desire to be praised unless such praise is called forth by meritorious conduct. Hoping that this may lead to an investigation of the cause of the failure above alluded to, and the firemen and citizens ba benefitted thereby, I remainjours, te. CiTIZIN.
To be turned out of a home, improved by years of labor, would be a great hardship, yet there are hundreds of men in Marshall county at all times subject to this misfortune. A very large number of titles to land in this County are perfectly worthless as they stand; bat many of then can be corrected

Sunday School a. in. rrrrr rrr-rr-rr My attention has been called to the following item in the Bourbon correspondence ('x") of the Republican of last week. After giving the shipments of lumber, &c. from this point for the past year, he says : "For the facts as given, we are iudebted to Mr. A. L. Morris, our acconiux datin freight agent." Mr. Morris is a very fine young man. and in every way competent to make an "accommodating freight agent," but he has not yet attained to that exalted posi tion! The blundciing of "x" in this respect is inexcusable, because he knew better, and is calculated to reflect on the agent, D. McDonald, who, during the two yearshc has been employed by the railroad company, has used "ms utmost exertions to make an "accommodating freight agent." As an item of interest he further states: "Among the receipts are enumerated 738 kegs of beer, 104 of which are cred j ited to the month of July.' Heduce the number of kegs to gallons and the amount is sufficient to drown everv man iu Bourbon." Wouldn't, the nnmhar of kefrs drnirn pv. Columbia City Republican. The above is from the pen of the founder of the "Bourbon Independent Press," The people of this place irrespective of party will be sorry to learn that Frank has so far forgotten himself as to be guilty of kicking a brother editor after he is down. If his own writing were free from Kllrmavi1iftm anil lii? naner .1 nmdol nT i i i literary purity, the laBsmam io wltich lie informs his readers of the fact, would sound much better than it docs. It is fair to presume that he was laboring under a bit of temporary insanity and that he will yet regret having vented his splecu on a helpless dead man. If Charlie Lobdell was a greater blackguard than some of the editors of the radical persuasion, it was because he had more brains. But it does not nniionr thnt bo was a bin elf rrnaril :it fl all. Although differing with him in political opinion, his cotemporary, the editor of the Lacrosse Republican pays him the highest compliment as a gentleman iu all the walks cf life, as a ripe scholar, a man of fine abilities, as an editor who has achieved a national reputation and a man whom to kuow was to admire; and as a token of respect and a tribute of personal worth he feels that it will be his duty at the next session of tht Wisconsin editori al convention to place the name of Charles Lobdell permanently on the record as one of the most successful editors of the north-west. The sexton of the Methodist church will confer a favor on the public who are desirous of attending the meetings now beinr held there, if he will take some effectual means to keep the boys who congregate there, from constantly running in and out and disturbing the entire congregation. 3 m i . y g - r h e i V S o e h we cd o ÖÖ PS 0 c o o i S o 2 -i T3 V 1 W H o m E s 'A Ö d P 8 0 i H 9S H o a c to a O w o B 3 T3 r K o q a (a O ef5 S5 O QO Oi GEO. aOCII .
