North, ; S Polk, S TlITECANOE 5 Union, S Walnut, 10 West, 3 The dcrmcrats of the several townships are requested to meet on Thursday,
December 12th, at the usual place; of holding township conventions, for the purpose of selecting delegates to the county convention. The great crisis through which the country is now passing calls for every democrat and conservative man to discharge his duty. Let there be a general turn out. Dy order Democratic Cex. Committee.
forgotten, but they will Cad out d 'liferent!); for, in the future they will be permitted to take a hack scat, and will never again be brought forward, or put into notice unless there is some more dirty work for them to do. ' These thoughts were suggested upon noticing ;.mj- of these miserable tools of tyranny back into their proper sphere, with their shoulderstraps off and uniforms doffed, and working for a livelihood. May they ever thus have to work, and may our country never again Ic in such a condition that any political party, no matter how mean, may have any use for them.
TO WASH IP CO A VEXTIOXS. - To-day the democrats are to meet at the usual places for holding township conventions, for the purpose of appointing delegates to the county convention, which will be held at the courtjruse, on Saturday next. A3 there is no strength with
out organization, it 13 to be hoped that
these primary meetings will be well at tended.
TO WII031 IT MAY CO.NCEUX.
Now, that political matters have taken
a change, and the radical and intolerant
partv which l as been ruling and ruining the country for some ycara past, is about
to be displaced, and the old constitution:!
and conservative party, that formed and
nurtured it, and made it all that it was
before P. was prostituted and debased by
abolitionism, fanaticism and mongrclism
is going to be reinstated, it may not be considered out of place to say a few words
as to the future course of the democratic party, when it shall have come into power, for the benefit of the poor inferable spies and tools of the- most tyranical and despotic administration that has ever cursed our government. We refer to those lowlived, cowardly individuals, who made it their business to hunt down and capture men who conscientiously believed it wrong to go into and assist in carrying on a war that vras prosecuted for the purpose of giving freedom and political equality to an inferior and brutal race of beings ; and who were not content with hunting and spying around for men, but entered houses occupied only by helpless women and children, and demanded information of them that thuy could not give, and threatening to shoot them if they did not comply with their requests. All who know anything of them at all, know they are, of all human being?, iho most contemptible ; yet, contemptible as they arc, they have some rights that will not be infringed upon by democrats.' They need not be afraid of being overpowered, at the hour of midnight, by ten or fifteen democrats a rope put about their necks, and marched off to the nearast limb or lamp-post, and there made to ewear allegiance to the democratic creed, or hang. They need not be afraid to go from home and leave a helpless family Tor fear a lot of white-feathered gentry, calling
th cmselves democrats, will break in their
doors, search their houses, and threaten
violence to their wives and children, as
somo unmanly and pusillanimous persons
did do, in this county and eleewherc, du
nr.g the war. They can go to their houses at night and sit down with their families, without having any democrat peaking around and watching them through the window or ky-hole; and in short, they will be permitted to go a. and mind their own business, and wih t only b let alone, but will be protcc .n their persona and property. Whib they will bo treated in this manner, by democrats, we would 'not hare them believe for a moment that it is au evidence of one particle of faith which any decent, honorable man has in them, for such is not the case. If they will stop and consider for a few moments, and see how differently they are treated by the more respectable portion of their own party lince they are done with them, they cannot help but have a tolerably correct idea ag to their real standing in society. Such men may flatter themselves that their cowardly and unmanly acts will be
It is generally conceded that IIon.T. A. Hendricks, at present United States Senator from Indiana, will be the nest democratic candidate for the office of governor of the state. There was no doubt at any time but that he was the first choice of the Indiana democracy for their standard-bearer in the next gubernatorial canvass; but it was not known until recently that he would accept tho nomination. With Hendricks for our standard bearer, the democrats of Indiana will cuter the next campaign with every assurance of a victorious resu'.t. Possessing all the elements of a statesman, a clear democratic record, and a well-carucd reputation as a public speaker, he will arouse such an enthusiasm in the breasts of the invincible democracy of Indiana as will stvecp away every vestigo of opposition. The slandcis which radicalism fulminates against those opposed to them, will fall harmless wheu directed against Mr. IIendricks. The people know him have trusted him and are but waiting the opportunity to trust him again.
Hon. Rodert J. Walker, who was
president Polk's Secretary of the Trcas
ury, has written a lengthy letter to the
merican people on the financial situation.
He proposes that the government make a
foreign loan of two hundred and fif:y mil
liins in gold, aud immediately resume
pecie payment ; in other words, ho propo
ses that we borrow of Paul to pay Peter,
and thus get out of debt. This financia
scheme would redound more to the credit
of its author if the gold could be obtaiu
cd, and would never have to bs repaid The people the tax-payers have al
ready expressed themselves in favor of a
scheme for lightening the burthen.- o
taxation, by paying off the national deb
in the established currency of the cum
try. Probably nine-tenths of the bonded
debt of the government is owned by aristocratic nabobs, who paid no gold for their bonds, and deserve none in return. The people will not permit tho adoption of any scheme which has for its object tho placing more gold in the hands- of the rich, and less in the possession of the poorer people.
A gentleman claiming to bo .1 democrat
recently said to us that if we could assure
inn that our paper would be " so.and-so," ic would subscribe. We are not of that
class of democrats who think it a cunning
thing, or one that redounds to the credit
of any one, to be mistaken by republicans
is belonging to their party. That kind of
democracy does not suit us, and vre are
safe hi saying that it has few sympathizers
in this or any other locality. The time
'ur shilly-shallying has pat, and these
who think to curry favor wich both par
ies by sitting astride the fence, " good
ord, good devil," may succeed fur a while,
but they will in due time be found out,
and so quietly and effectually dropped as
0 somewhat astonish them. If a man pretends to be a democrat,
ct him he one; if a republican, let him -
be that ; whatever lie is let he him be
so decided in his opinions that all shall
know jut where he stands. "We purpose
publishing a (hmo-ratic paper. If any one docs not like that kind of a paper, we
now of no law compelling him to take it.
That an editor, be he on what side
ic may, should bo counseled to edit a pa
per of a character .so lukewarm that no
one can tell where he puis h:.s faith, is simply absurd. There arc neutral papers
enough in tins country to accommodate all
.such doubting souls, and consequently we
iopD tobe permitted to publish the DEM
OCRAT in such a manner as to merit the approbation of men whoso democracy
gives forth no uncertain sound.

tio:v. Among the many gentlemen whose
names have beci mentioned in connection
with nominations at the ccminsr conven

rence county, for the office of secretary of
state.
Judge Carleton needs but little intro
duction to the people of Indiana, unless it
be in the extreme northern portion of the
state. In tho southern and middle districts he has been long and favorably
known as one of the ablest and most dis
tinguished men of our party. An able jurist, a profound thinker, aud an eloquent speaker, he has for years stood in the foremost rank of prominent democrats of the state. His steady a.llicmice to the imperishable principles of democracy in the darkest periods oi its history, entitles him to the gratitude of. democrats everywhers. When others faltered, he was faithful.
When the storms ol ianaticssm were portion of the township bo thoroughly

It is a noteworthy fact that ladicalism can see much to condemn in anything in which democrats arc concerned, while praticwig a profound ignorance of anything going wrong when its own party arc the sole actorv. .An exemplification of this truth may be found in the fact that a radical journal, published not many miles from this town, found space recently to vent its pent-up wrath at the town authorities because a drunken (white) man made his w:iy into two or three housos in the town, and frightened the inmates, but doing no further damage ; yet this same radical journal has not a word of indignation or comment on the atrocious crime committed on a defenceless women in an adjoining county, by a member of its own party. If it should be conceded that radical excoriations arc to any extent unpleasant to thosa upon whom they arc iuflicted, the advantage which tho " nation's wards " possess over the " white trash " is painfully manifest.

The impeachment business has been shelved by the very decitivo voto of 108 against 57. It is stated that Mr. Ashley, of Ohio, the gentleman who has endeavored fo ride into popularity and fame on tho impeachment horse, took his departure from the house, immediately after tho result of the rote was announced, in a very dejected frame of mind. The " anxious inquiry" about Mr. Ahiiley, which we append, may not. in this connection, bo deemed inappropriate: There was an old man from Ohio, Who paid that Ii could, if he'd try, O Hain Mich a urrnt row, inip-achnn nt. And now What a become of that man from Ohio? The proprietors of the Winamac Demo, erat have commenced publishing both sides of their paper at home, instead of haviDg their inside printed at Chicago as heretofore.

No people under Heaven wer ever nnrc loudly and urgently called upon by the perils of their situation to govern their action by reason and prudence than the American people at the present time. On every side is danger, aud wor?t of all, blind partisanship does not see and realize it. The public mind has been plied with falsehood and misrepresentation until it has been made mad, and hate and prejudice, taking the reins from justice aud reason, have ariven us well nih to desJrnctiou. What is wanted to extricate us from ouf perilous situation and secure our safety is,to u'J'leceive the people, and bring them to see that they have been misled bj; inflammatory appeals to their passions, and that justice, magnanimity and mercy arc not only in themselves noble above everything else, but can alone lead to unity, prosperity and happiness. Tho light of truth must be thrown into the darkness of error and prejudice, and to this work every democratic journal should devote all iU space and all its energies
for the next twelve months. Our people, honest but impulsive, have been led away by excitement, aud brought to the very verge of ruin by falso teaching. They only need to be made to seo this and, thank God, they arc seeing it ii to make short work of thir deceivers and betrayers, ag they havo been doing in tho recent elections. Let the voico of reason be heard, then, throughout the land, calling upon the people to pause, cxaniino and candidly investigate tho momentous hsucs involved in the issue of 1803. Tho prospect is encouraging, and every arm should feel strong and every heart courageous. The sunlight is already breaking the dark clouds which have so long hung like a funeral pall over our beloved laud, and soon, very soon, will the beautiful sentiment of the poet bo triumphantly vindicated. Oi;il Canhid.VTES. The democratic papers of the state are pretty generally favorable to the rcnomination of the same ticket for state officers as that which was selected by the state convention last year. Indeed it would bo difficult to lind gcntlemcn of more energy or greater ability than those which constituted tlie ticket in 1S0. Still, there arc equally as able, energetic and popular men in the party whose friends aro pressing their claims with firmness and confidence. So far as we arc concerned, wc would not have the ticket precisely as it was last year. The distinguished services rendered the party in the great struggle in lUH, by our eminent fellow-citizen, Hon. .lohn lt. CofiYoth struggling against hope, yet undaüntingly carrying the banner of democracy defiantly aloft, even into Iho jaws of death ; " sacrificing his comfort and his means, and c.er occupying tho foreground in the conflict entitle- him to the highest position on the ticket. Hut as the universal desire is to have Hon. T. A. Hendricks in that place, the friends of Mr. Cofi'roth will ask of the convention the second position on the ticket lieutenant governor. The democracy cf Indiana are familiar with the history of Mr. Oeleroth as a lawyer and a legislator, and as a public speaker ho has few cjuals in the state. A.

Wine." the several choruses, especially those ior male voices scenes which surpass all our wildest conceptions of the beauty of fairy-land, a ballet which quite casts in the shade all which we have ever seen before, all these combine to render this the grandest and most effective spectacle ever witnessed in this country. Uarncy Williams and wife arc playing at McYicker's, and, considering the powerful attraction of u Undine, " have been doing a good business. Wood's museum has been doing little or nothing in consequence of the attractions against it. ly and by tho managers ol this festive establishment may possibly liscover that the production of old plays, however attractive in times past, vill not pay against heavy sensational attractions at other places. A very funny case is just now in one of our courts. A bold theological mierilla sort of fellow, a Uev. .Mr. Cole, runs a church on his own hook down on the south side. He collects money for improvements, necessary expenses, etc., and somehow alwav conies out on the wrong sido of the ledger. Among hi weaknesses are oysters. They are his necessary expenses, "sundries, " you understand. Not long since he started for New York to get aid for his church. Au oyster Iralor, au unregeneratcd soul, stood at the depot and demanded compensation, and he would have it. Now the reverend gentleman brings suit for Iaiuage to his character by the detention. G. The court of inquiry in the ca-3 of tho Sixth nnl l'ighth llegimcnts of .Nar) land militia, charged with olTeringan indignity to the governor, will probably order a public reprimand of both regiments, and dismiss the officers of three of the companies and difdionorably discharge from service the enlisted men of those companies. The Spanish government has been very anxious about the intentions of tho United States iu regard to taking possession of Porto liieo, Cuba, aud several other islands, the authorities having hoard a rumor that they were about to be seized. Ye are advised through a friend, that Thomas I. Wisner, Ks.i,., of Wells county, will be a caudid ite before the democratic state convention, for the nomination of clerk of the supreme court. Mr. Wisner comes to us highly recommended for honesty and capability, he having filled the oflieo of clerk of the circuit court of his county for t wehe years, as principal and deputy. Wc cheerfully commend him to the convention as woithy of the position to which he aspires. Franklin Democrat. We learn that Joseph Maddux, residing near Montpelier, has been missing since last Friday night. He left Trenton, Blackford county, on horseback, about dark, for home, being at the time considerably intoxicated. The horse reached home about midnight, riderless. Diligent
search for the missing man throughout Saturday and Sunday failed to reveal his
whereabouts or fate. It was feared he had fallen by the roadside and frozen to death, as he was to have been at home early in the evening to be present at the marriage of his daughter. Failing to come to time the wedding proceeded in his
absence. His remains had not been found at last advices. --<Bluffton Banner>.
