Etymology of the word IIoosifu The venerable and witty Dr. Wood, in 1113 iarewell discourse to his cnarire. Michigan City, gave the following account, ot ths "true origin ot the word Hoosier: "When tin Ohio Falls canal was bein constructed, a number of Indianians and Kentuckians were thrown together on the work, the result being a continual war between the representatives of the rival States, in most every encoun'- the 'Corn Crackers proving victorious, until their Opponent Legan to regard them, as they claimed tobe, 'half horse half alligator,' and able to whip anything mortal. In the southern part of this State, about this time, was a Pole an cx-oOieer under Napoleon, who gave lectures on the war, in which he took occasion to praise up his own troops the famous Iluzzars to such an extent that the impression conveyed to his hearers was that the Hussars or Iloosars, as he pronounced it were invincible, worse even than the 'half boss half alligator' Kentuckians. At least this was the idea that a young man by the name of Short had of them, who had listened in breathless admiration to the lecturer's thrilling description. Well, fehort went down to work on the canal, and being a new comer, was immediately set upon by the Kentucky bullies, for the purpose of trying his metal. The metal was good and he trhashed three ot the 'Corncrackers' in succession. Throwing up his hat and giving a yell, he exclaimed ! Tni a Hoosier V This is the true origin of the word, and there arc persons in the State who knew thh boy, Short, and the incident." EnanicIIliK Ladles' Faccn. , . Fron U Mode Jhis is the way it is done: You first apply to the human face divine a wash of elder water, which removes every impurity. This done, you lave Ihe face anew with tepid water, then dry the skin with fine linen till it is perfectly gmooth and velvety. You then apply to this surfaca a perfectly white, a pink white, or a cream white enamel. The real Paris enamel or (mail de Paris is slightly tinted. It n a paste, and covers the surface smothly, making it marble like This artificial covering being thick, lasts i . 1... a long time, Dut tne lace must not he wash -r l . ea. in oraer 10 remove any imrmntv from the skin, or rather from the enamel a fmali sponge dipped in rose water is used, and tne enamel carelully restored. Ristori's face is enameled slightly. The followers of this fashion are, in England, Miss Burdett Couth, and the fair lady whose husband refused to pay several thousand pounds for numberless enamelinga. The price lor a "permanent enameling" is 350. If skilfully doue, and the cheeks touched with rouge, with a little "fixing up" of eye browö, you cannot, at night, and a foot or two off, tell an old woman from a young 030. In America, the fair Mrs. R. fdlows this fashion so thoroughly that sh coats her face, arms and neck with the preparation. She is kept in countenance by the wealthy Mrs. B. and sundry others. K.11 Gloves. From a New York Letter. The new style of kid glove is finished with a cord and tassel, lac'iDg on the back of the wrist for ornament, not use. Duttous are used to some extent for fastening gloves, but the new gloves are clasped with studs mechanically fastened to one side. The varieties of gloves are the plain, with two buttons; long wrists with welt and band, fastened wiih three buttons, or with twu studs; a wider band, with three studs ; and long-armed gloves with four studs ; the larger ones with six. The studs take the place of three buttons. The fashionable color in gloves are "cuir," Russian gray, a purple hue, French gray, a lavender tint, lilac, purple, lavender, amber, and Giraffe. Perhaps the ladies who purchase Alexandre's gloves, at Stewart's, do not know that a gentleman who serves them 13 the genius who devises the improvements, and designs the new colors and styles for the retail trade. He goes
through the forest and gathers autumn leaves of every hue, bleuds them, and studies the effect in light and shade, and so devises new colors. During the day he is in his place at the counter. Iiis evenings are srent, often to a late hour, in study, and in getting up new designs and colors that arc lorwarded to the manuiacturer. Friendship. We should make it a principle to extend the hand of Friendship to every man who discharges faithfully his duties and maintains cood order who manifests a deep interest in the welfare of general society. whose deportment is upright, and whose mind is intelligent with out stopping to ascertain whether he swings a hammer or draws a thread. There is nothiug so distant from all natural claim as the reluctant, the backward sympathy, the forced smile, the checked conversation, the hesitating compliance, which the well off are apt to manifest to those a little lower down, with whom, in the comparison of intellect and principles of virtue, they sink into insignificauce. Theodore Parker aptly compared some who grew suddenly rich to cabbage growing in a bed. They smother the violets, but after all they arc nothing but cabbage heads. A man told a beggar-boy he had better ask for manners thau money. To which the boy replied that he had asked for what the man seemed to have the most of. A revengeful individual sworo he would have revenue on a man who had offended him. uRy Jove, said he, buy his boy's each a tin horn." Women are true to one another in all things but babies ; and there, it must be confessed, they do flatter each other a little bit, A mathematician had discovered that an iufallible method for producing division in families is to vurftiply jealousies. Self-love is at once the most delicate and the most vigorous of our defects ; a nothinj -wounds it, but Lothing kills it. A young lady in Tennessee, vhen kiss ed says . "you thief, put that right back where you got it. The man who trieJ to whistle a bar of soap; has attempted to a ing a stave off a molasses cask. "Sally, what time do your folks dine?" ''Soon as you go away that's missus' orders." The vanity of human life is like a river. constantly passing away, and yet constantly coming on. We are never satisfied that a lady un derstands a kiss unless we have it from her own mouth. Love without money has been compared to a pair of shiny leather Loots without soles. A fop is like a cinnamon tree the lark is worth more thau the body. A governess advertising for a situation says she is perfect mistress of her oicn tongue. When are writers like cattle? When they arc driven to the pen. Poetry is said to be a gift, but it very oiten proves to be a thctt. The mug of a fool is known by there being notlnng in it. Devoted to the interests of the Democratic Party, the principles of "Washington, Jeffer son and Madison, and to the best interests of the people of Marshall county.
