The Odd Fe ilows and citizens of Bourbon will unite in celebrating the 4th of July this year. Tbcj- invite their neighbors to join them in a Picnic at Bourbon; where a general good time is anticipated. As nothing is on the programme here lor that day, many of our citizens will doubtless go to Bourbon. Thirty-four Senators have written that they will be in Washington on the 3d of July, in obedience to Thad. Stevens' proclamation convening Congress in extra session on that day. This number makes four more than a quorum, and will represent nearly half the States. Where ia the man that says we hav'nt a government? Several week? ago a petition was circulated about town which was being numerously eigncd at the time, for the purpose of obtaining enough signatures to apply for a city charter for Plymouth. What has become of the petition? Wa3 there an insufficient number of nams obtained? Or has the petition been thrown aside? Messrs. Root & Cady, of Chicago, arc publish i ig some excellent new music. They have favoreel us with several of their publications recently, among which we notice the following beautiful pieces : Temple Polka Mazourka; Annie Laurie, with brilliant variations ; Love the Guerdcon of Love; Thinking of llm, Polka; The Shaking ci the hand? Song and Chorus; Sunny night Schottisch ; SV.tirg Waltz. The Erie Railway. In our recent trip to the East we passed over this road from Dunkirk to New York, a dince of 1C0 miles. The Erie Railway is without exception the fiaeat road we have ever traveled OTer. It bxa th amooth est track ; its coaches are the beat ventilated ; its sleeping coaches re the most luxurious of any in the United States, and it Is the shortest and quickest route to He York and ether points. east.
The Good Old Times That we hare so long wished for, are almost here again; for instance, you can buy Prints at 0 cents per yard, not yery good to be sure, but you nay buy handsome Prints that are warranted fast colors at 12 cents; yard wide Sheeting at 12 cents, the very best and heaviest at 20 cents ; rubber Circle Combs at twenty cents; good Spool Thread at 8 cts ; 12 doz Shirt Buttons for 15 cts ; &V,roo Carpet at 50 cts all Wool at 75 cts per yard. Also near sighted spectacles. All the above articles are the very bestinthe market. Wc learn that Dr. L. Johnson haslocited in Bourbon, where he has engaged in the practice of medicine. The Dr. is a gentleman of undoubted intcgr itr, possesses a thorough knowledge of medicine, and we have no doubt will soon gain a good practice in Bourbon and v'cinity. Persons wishiug to procure a correct likeness of themselves, put up in an elegant manner, either Arubrotrpe or Photograph, should not fail to go to the old and reliable Gallery of Mr. G. Ewing, over Pershing's Drug store. He is prepared to take all styles of Pictures at the most reasonable terms ; and from his thorough acquaintance with the business, is confident he can give satisfaction. Mauuied. The Ilon.Jcss-e D. Bright, formerly a member of the United States Senate from Indiana, now a resident cf Kentucky, has been unanimously nominated by the Democracy to represent the counties of Carroll and Trimble in the lower branch of the Kentucky Lccjislature. lie has accepted the nomination. BOURBON CORRESPONDENCE. Bouunox, Ind., June, 2ö, 1SG7. Eds. Democuat : The glorious Fourth bias fair to pars by unobserved in this locality by the people generally. The Odd Fellows I understand have made arrangements to have a celebration on that tlay, and I presume will constitute all the celebrating of a public kind wc shall have. Our country has become demoralized to such an extent that it seems almost impossible fort lie people to unite on a common platform, and for one day even, forget party sect and opinion and celebrate in the good eld way the natal dny cf American Independence. We have become loo selfish. Wc prize our country too little. We have forgotten in the progrcs of events what our forefathers en dured to give to posterity the freedom of thought and opinion, and we look only at the present for a little social enjoyment. The time was and is not farther back in the history of this country than twenty years, when eur people en matsc turned out and gave their time and means in celebrating and commem orating the heroic deeds of those who formed "the best government the sun ever shone upon." Sectional hate was unknown at that time. Politics and religion and every thing calculated to elivide society in the least was left out. All had but one object in view to be happy and make others happy. But a change began to come over the spirit of the people's el reams, and instead of following in the old and familiar path through which their fathers and grandfathers had travcletl before them, they began to run after strange Gods, and the result has been far worse than was anticipatcel by those who believed they could see the hand writing on the wall at that time. It was in 185G, I believe that fifteen "hale fellows well met," fcelins the spirit of 'IG moving them, assembled in the dining hall of the Rail Road bouer at Plymouth, (since burned down,) and cele. bratcd the 4th in the usu-i" wry. Of that lit tic bond cf patriots, two have gone to tliir final resting pUce peace to their ashes and the rest through all the vicissitudes of eleven years, Rtill remain and are faithful to the principle they then advocated. One of the number wrote an "impromptu" fir the occasion whkh was sang to the tune of "Sprig ofShellalah," with great applause as expressing the sentiments of those present. A? a matter of "history" and an item of interest to those who will remember it with pleasure, I subjoin a copy: Way down here in Plymouth, ntOabe'i,(on the We've met to rjoic on th Fourth of July, And gf:t patriotic on "Bonrbon and Krs."
Tbey may prate of parade on thi glorious day Of sectarian societies with other child's play Tbey may make it ectarian, white, black or pheep's gray, But when tyrants and battles are out of the' way, We t7iuft get patrioticln the regular waj. Our fathers of old loved the story and song, Andtho't a small "decoction" no very great wrong On thi joyful day if it was'nt too strong. Then shall we o'er their graves with a sanctified face. That would look like a donkey's or monkey's Ciimace.. Refuse to stand up on this day in our place. With the be?t of Rood will and the merrie?t rrace And respond to the "Smik" oa sweet Liberty's face ? Let croakers growl on what care wc for their croak. A3 itissue3 from under their hypocrite cloak We have heads that are clear and we've- "hearts that arc oak." Then fill to the brim, trp high let it riso DriiA coiifiiiion to croakers and disunion cries, Contempt for all sectional tin.e serving lies; May their authors all gocd men forever dispise, And have eternal successions of Fourth cf July's The Corporation ordinance requiring proprietors of saloons to paj- $100 license went into effect yesterday. None of them took out license, hut closed their doors to all except such as wished to buy in larger quantities than by the drink. So you see. Bourbon is the most temperate town this side of the Maine Liquor Law.Ii. D. Weaver & Co. have just put up a Soda Fountain. Drinking soda water is very innocent amusement, anel as there is nothing in the "ingredients" that is calculated to intoxicate, the public are invited to go'and partake of the cooling draught. Dr. L. Johnson of your place, has located among us for the purpose of practicing medicine. He is a young man of good character; well read, attentive to business, and fs deserving of a liberal patremage. Wchada refreshing rain in thi3 locality on Monday evening. It was timely and gootl. Weevil have been discovered in some fields of wheal near here, but not in sufficient numbers to do a great deal of damage.
We learn that three rr.eu living in Polk town 3iip in tlvs county, were arrested a few days since by tLe Sheriff of St. Joseph County, on charge of grand larceny. The circumstances as related to us are about thcee : Two of the three employ. d the other 1 0 drive off a yoke of oxai owned in the neighborhood and deliver them at Lakeville, where they were received by the two and driven to South nend and t-old to a butcher. The cattle being missed, search was made for them without effecr. Suspicion was excited, and a visit to South Bond revealed the true state of the case. One of the oxen was not yet butchered, and being identified, was reclaimed, A warrant wa3 i3sued for the pirties implicated, who were arrested, and now await the cction of the Circuit Court of St. Joe. County. Such is the history of the case as we have learned it from persons in the neighborhood. Man, MovkT3 and Gorillas; lion S. P. Chase, Edward Carswell, Ma lam Lc Vert, Mrs. H. B Stowe, Rev.
