Shall the -1th of July bo allowed to pass without a proper demonstration in remembrance of the great events of 'To1, and the achievements of our forefathers? A few years since it was commemorated in a manner befitting the dignity of the nation ; but the people Lave gradually grown indifferent to those great deeds to which they owe the liberty of which they have been so justly prou.l, as the country has drit tel towards despotism; and the burning words of the Declaration of Independence seem to have Ion their significance to the descendants of those whose genhi3, strong love of liberty und valor, made that declaration good. It is of course now too late to make arrangements to formally celebrate the memorable day, but it may not be entirely unprofitable to recall to mind the glorious history of those years which gave birth to Independence and the Constitution, the happiness, peace and prosperity we enjoyed while our rulers were guided by, and adhered to the principles of Washington and Jefferson, and contiastthem with the an archy, tnmult and disturbances that everywhere prevail undr the auspices of the partv la powr.
