The London. ciTspapcri. It 13 stated by a correspondent that the circulation of the London Timts is about CO, 000, and its profits last rear were atjut 250,000 in gold. The "London Tehgraph, a penny paper, has the largest circu'ation of any daily newspaper in the world, about 100,000, and its profits arc about S-GO.000. It is a reform paper; whilst the Standard, also a penny paper, and the organ of the Perby Ministry, circulates 5.003 copies, and makes 3125,000 a year. The Loudon Herald, which is also a Ministerial organ, and id owned by the Standard, circulates 1,000 copies though it pays S10.0Ö0 profit. The Daily Xems, the Liberal organ, prints 5,000 daily, and has an annual profit of 825,000; whilst the Star, which is the organ of Mr. Bright, ho being reported to be a part owner and occasional contributor, circulate? 30,000 copies, and last year made over 840,000. These arc the chief London dailies, and they are all large cightp.ago newspapers, excepting the Timrs, the daily c-lition of which is never le?s than twelve pages and has been a3 high as twenty-four. Its custoniarv size is six teen panes, und its annual receipts and ex-; ponditures arc probably as large as those of all the other Loudon daily journals combined. Hour Xrgro Suffrage Work In Washington. The Washington Xatonul IntdUjaiccr thus shows how the negro-.rafl"r3ge experiment work in the District of Columbia. It pa.s : 4,In view of the fact that the negroes go in a solid toly at the beck of a tew white men, and do not divide iu their political movement, like other classes, have not our ctizen rcr.soa to fear that there mav be peril ahead ? The lessons of history leach in vain if vvc do not take alarm at the prospect of a va.st body of men, most of whom are unprepared by the most common test of intelligence to exercise the sight of franchise, coming in and controlling public policy over thvj heads of two or three times their number of whi:e men. Property-holders, tax-payers, are. u'l substantial persons in society, should be pro foundly agitated by even the most remote pro?pect of an oligarchial control of a few white demagogue?, who use the shouldc s of the blacks as the stepping-stones lo place, power and authcriy. What atrocious scheme of outrage in legislation may not beefiecUd by such parties, if they succeed in aims as hijh-reachinc' as the means to effect their objocts are notoriously culpable? Yet, if free-born and intelligent white men are willing to humble themsalves in the dust, and alkw nc .v-fledged officials that have net their confidence, to trample upon their rights and interests, it is certaiu that such neglect of duty, sho'd it result disastrously, will awaken the condemnation, and not the sympathy, of the citizens of other communities. When the black race, under white olficers, arc marshaled solid against the mass of whites, hall the latter yield to whatever fate may impend, without making a manly effort in & peaceful direction to protect and preserve their rights?" Wendell 2vhllllp Down on tiencrai Grant. In a letter recently written by Wendell Fhillips, he gives vent to the followin ideas on General Grant : But I think wo must direct our caro a little farther ahead. Johnson is watched, and will be crippled. The next important question is, to whom shall the Nation give the helm for tho next four years? It a Democrat gets it, we shall lose two-thirds uf the fruits of the war. If a compromiser has it, we shall 1 jse one-half. With Radicalism at the helm, we may save two-thirds of what we have earned. In that next four years the pressure from business men for the Government to open, in some way, and on some conditions, the old chunels of business; will be irresistible. The Republican party havesecured (if they do secure') ft party triumph, which, by keeping the South out of the Electoral College of 1SGS. vill give away. The next Administration, therefore, must be expected to settle this question. The bias ofthat man who occupies the White House then will be of immense importance. Now the country is drifting into the Presidency of General Grant a man of whose political ideas (if he has any) no man can tell us any thing. Tbc first assertion of his friends is that he is a safe man, because he has no political idea?, and will be in safe hands. Alias ! our present iucubus was once in good hands. Next time we want a man with brains, and a heart of his own, not one who depends on being girded and guided, "whither he will not." Astounding madness ! Republicans tell us they must nominate Grant, cl?3 the Democrats will. In these hours, when the Nation agonizes for existence, wc take a man for our leader so lacking in principle that he will Buit either party equally well. Two armies in deadly fight, one will deliberately shooe its leader such a perfect Swiss that the other will clutch him if tbc first does not. Linooln'a fear of Kentucky did us inGnito harm. I hope Grant's love for it will not be allowed to do us more. Memphis, New Orleans and Baltimore ohow how Graut does his military duty. Do they encourage us to trust him with any civil ones? The name by 'fhich the new Russian territory is to be known is exciting discuseion, and an anonyrxojs paragraphist remarks; "Esquimaux (or better, Eskimo, according to Latham') would do very well; Norland might do, as we are not likely to get any thing Kyoud it. If it is proposed p.ire any on- of our Generals a cold immortality ?t it, call it Wickle, after Gen ral Sides

rovrclers. The various bakiüg powders that have been invented from time to time having failed to give entire satisfaction to the baking public, the "Fat Contributor," has been prevailed upon to apply his inventive genius to the subject, which he has done with the most satisfactory results. He claims the following superior qualities for his powders : Their Strength. One package of my baking powders will raise bread to at.y height. I am convinced I could rai?e it clear up to the moon, if I culd get there. They are Economical. For raising biscuit cheaply they are invaluable. With one terspoonful, a woman the other day raised enough biscuit to keep the family a week. She raised it out of a baker's wagon. For Baking. They are good for LakiDg bread, baking cake, baking pie3, baking bricks, and ood ff a clean bake. A woman who claimed that her husband --wasn't more than half baked" tried some of the rowder3 on him. Result baked him so a. hard that he has been crusty ever since. Non-explosive. They won't explode, like some of the gunpowders. For liaising Cakes. No powder3 like them for raising cakes. Ice men use them exclusively now for raising cakes of ice into their ice houses. If a man wants to shave himself and! can t raise a take ol soap, ict h:tu try the powder. No razor can raze equal to them. liaise Anything. I have taken a plantation in Louisiana, and intend to use mv sr powders to raise cotton with. A. man wrote me from Saginaw that he had a large family of children to raise; wanted my advice how to do it. Sent him a package ot my baking powders. Gave my landlord a package to try. The next day he raised my rent, which I have tried ineffectually to do for some time. Builders arc using them all over the city to raise houses with. If you arc hard up, you might be able to "raise the wind" with them. Besides the above uses, these baking pewders are invaluable to raise your hat to the ladies, raise a kite, raise votes, raise the price of coal, raise a militia Company, raise a breezcj raise the Ohio, raise corn, raise your eyebrows, raise liberty poles, raise a muss, make xoit hair ris raise umbrellas, raise a storm, raise watcrwelon?, raise a ten dollar note from a one, raise the people, raise your temper, and raise Old Harry generally. The way it Works. The Montgomery (Alabama) Advertiser says : r "At the late election in Tuscnmbia, Alabama, four fifths of the negro vctc3 were cast for Major, Sloss for Mayor, who waä a 1 Surcau aent. Lpoa thia the Adv.rtitcr makes the to!i owing comments : 'Tho first and only election iu Alabama under the new n-jimc. shows that the colored people understand that their interests are with tue whites of the South, and nut with the Yankees, who want their votes iu order to get office and make money out of the country and out of their labor. If the Yankees get their voters and coutiuue in office, they will put a still heavier tax cn cotton than three cents per pound. "Where docs this three cents per pound come from ? Out of the nego's labor. This is a very good argument, indeed, to address the neuro. Breakfast Table Poisons Ten and C'ollec What we think we Brink, and W hat we Brink. From the New York Sun. A case now before the Court of Appeals has developed some curious facts in regard to what the public suppose to be coffee. The dispute aiises from the failure of a certaiu machiuc to do what the inventor claimed for it. The beauty of this machine was a peculiar and miraculous power of restoring, "when properly applied to damaged coileo, much ot its original freshness and flavor." The machine, when properly used, would, it is alleged, turn out 200 bags of coffee a day. It would be interesting to know precisely what raw material was used in this ambiguous sort of mill, but nothing is mentioned beyond the black lead, sand aud soapstono. These arc nice ingredients for the breakfast table. but they only assist in giving weight at.d color to thej wretched compounds which such machines "turn out," under the nimc aud disguise of coffee. If the public knew one-half the trash that euters into the composition of what is commonly sold as ground coffoc, they would be struck with astonishment aud disgust. Among the most innocent and refreshing of these is old coffee grounds, which constitute a val uable vehicle for the reception of "original freshuess" by the combined influence of chemistry and machinery. Beyond these the public had better not prosecute their inquiries, r.t least until they have resolved to give up the use of all such cofiec. An analysis of the vile compounds called coffee would bring some strange facts to light. The ingredients for such mixtures may be divided into two classes the innocent and the poisonous The former arefor the most part disgust ing alike to the fancy and the palate, such as the secoud-handrefu.se of other people's coffee pots, and various roots and grains. i he latter, or smaller class is smaller in bulk, but the materials are selected from the drug store with reference solely to fra grauce, flavor, color and weight, and with out the least regard to their unwholesome qualities. Many of them are absolutclv poisonous, and wc arc assured hy a physi cian much sick'icss and distress arc caused ly the daily use of cheap substitutes for coffee. The same is true of three-fourths uf what is sold ad tea. The consumption of tea and coffee is so enormous that im mense fortunes aro realized by this class of adulterations. For tea, a great variety of native leaves are so ingeniously substituted as almost to defy detection. Another Veteran. A veteran of the revolution named Grimes, aged 113 years, is living iu the adjoining county of Wells. He served in the American army from the beginning of inc war to us ciose unucr me immediate command of General Washington. His health is good; his senses aro perfect; and he worked in the harvest field last year. Old Grimes, then, "that pood old soul," rcnowued in song aud etory, isn't dead yet; and it is probable that the old "gray coat all buttoned down before," , which old Grimes used to wear, may do ' fcer vice yet.
