Letter from General Longstreet It Trill be ßeen by tbo followiDg letter published in a New Orleans paper, that General Longstrcet favors the acceptance of the Military Bill of Congress : New Orleans, La., March 18, 18G7. As I hare never applied myself to politics, I can not claim to speak to the wise statesmen of the country, who are devoting their energies to the solution of the problem'which agitates the public raind. I can only speak the plain, honest convictions of a soldier. It can hardly be necessary, at this late day, to enter into a discussion of the matter that is -jtinsuallv brought up in arguing vipon the proposed plan for reconstructing the Government. Indeed. I think that
many oftheu are not pertinent to theques- j tion. The striking feature, and the oue that our people should keep in view, is, that we are a conquered people. Recognizing this fact fairly and squarely, there is but one course kft for wise men topursue. Accept the terms that are offered us by the conquerors. Thero can be no discredit t j a conquered people for accepting the conditions offered by their conquerors. Nor is that any occasion for a feeling oi humiliaticn. W have made an hone3tf and I hope that I may say, a creditable fight, but we have lost. Let us come forward then and accept the ends involved in the straggle. Our people earnestly desire that the Constitutional Government shall be re-established, and the only means to accomplish this is to comply with the requirements of the recent Congressional legislation. It is said by some that Congress will not receive us even after wuhavc complied with their conditions. But I can find no sufficient reason for entertaining this proposition for a moment. I can not admit that the reprssentative men cf a crsat nation could nrue su:a a pledge in mm iaun. Admitting, however, that there is such j a mental reservation, can tint be any cx-j cu3C for U3 in failing to discharge our duty ? j Let us accept the terms as wc are in du- - . i . 1 i y bound to do, and if there is a lack of good j faith, let it be upou others. I am very respectfully, your most obedient servant, JAMES LONG ST RE ET. Mixing the "Infantry.' An Alliance correspondent of the Canton (0) Repository, relates the following: Some days ago there was a dancing party given for the benefit qf the Fenians, on the outskirts cf town, and several cf the ladie3 present had little babies, whose ccisy perversity required tco rc.uch attention to allow their ma's to enjoy the "hop." A number cf gallant yocng men volunteered to guard the infantry v;hile the ladies engaged In tka ''break down." No sooner had the mothers left their cherubs in the hands of the mischievous wretches, than they stripped the darlings, changed their clothes, giving the apparel of one to another. The dance over, the mothers each 'took as ep thought her own baby, and hurriedly ft the scene cf gaieties and started to their homes, several miles apart, being far on the way before ihe "peep-o day." On the following day there was a tremendous row in the settlement. Mothers discovered that one night had changed the sex of their babiesj then commenced some of the tallest female pedestrianism. Mving miles apart, it required two days to unmix the little cherubs, and will require a3 ruasy weeks to restore the mothers to their natural sweet dispositions. The Springfield (111.) Register says a rural couple were spliced in a dry goods tore of that city on the 2d inst, permission to use the premises for the purpose having been accorded them by the proprietor, on the principle that "weddings are certain, sooner or later, to pooducc a briskness in the dry goods business." A gentleman in Iowa advertises for a wife "who wears her own hair, her own teeth, her own checks, her own 'buzzum without having went aud gone and paid for them. Power of a Word. A mother on the green hills cf Vermont, stood at her garden gate, holding by her right hand a son Mxteen years old, mad with 'o love of the sea. "Edward," said she, "t ey tell me that the great temptation of the seaman's life, is drink. Promise me before you quit your mother's hand, thatyou will nearer drink." Said he, for he told me the ptory, "I gave her the promise. I went the broad globe over; Calcutta, the Mediterranean, San Francisco, the Capo of Good Hope, and during forty years, whenever I saw a glass filled with the sparkling liquor, my mother's form by the garden gate on the hillside of Vermont, rose up before mej and to-day, at sixty, my lips are innocent of the taste of liquor." Was not that sweet evidence of the power of a single word ? And yet it was but half; "for," said he, "yesterday, there came into my counting room a man of forty, and asked me, 'Do you know me?' 'No said I. 'I was brought once said he to my informant, 'drunk into your presence, on ship-board; you were a passenger ; tho captain kicked me aside ; you took me into your berth, kept ni3 there until I had slept off the intoxication, and then you asked me if I had a mothtr. I said never, mat l Knew ot ; i never knew a mother s voice, ou told me of yours at the garden gate , and to-day, twenty years later, I am master of one of the finest packet- in Naw York, and I come to ask you to come and see me." How far back that little candle throws its beam the mother's word on the green hill-side ot Vermont! God bo thanked for the almighty power of a single word. Enter rich heiress. "Good morning, aunt; how does thee do?" "Very well., I thank thee. And how does thee do?" "Very well. Docs thee see my new dia mond ear-rings: "Ahl are they real dia monds?" "Yes, they cost three thousand dollars. My lover gave them to me. How does thee like them ?" "Well, I must bear my testimony according to my convictions, and I must say that I would rather know that theo wore clean linen, than to see thee with those diamonds in thy ears." Curtain falls.- Xeto Bedford Standard. m m - A Postscript. "I love to look upon a young man. There is a hidden potency concealed within his breast which charms and pains me." The daughter of a clergyman happening to find the above sentence at the close of J.er father's manuscript as he had left it in his study, Eat down and added : Them'a my sentiments exactly, papa, except the 'pain.'
